Islamic Illuminated Art Workshop with Khalida Marefat at the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History

December 13 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Islamic Illuminated Art Workshop with Khalida Marefat at the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History

This hands-on workshop introduces participants to the traditional art of Islamic illumination, known as Tazhib. Afghan artist Khalida Marefat and her brother, Emran, will guide attendees through the shapes and techniques used to create shamsas, the intricate sun medallions that are central to this artistic tradition. Guests will observe a demonstration, view examples of Khalida’s work, and receive materials to paint their own illuminated design. This workshop welcomes all skill levels, and all supplies are included.

Khalida Marefat is an Afghan artist who relocated to the United States in 2022 after the Taliban takeover. Trained at the Turquoise Mountain Institute, she has produced illuminated pieces for both national and international audiences and continues her work in Connecticut, weaving personal narrative into this historic art form.

The workshop takes place on December 13, 2025, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.
