BraeVal Cover Dog Classic at William P. McFadden Trust

A weekend of field trial competition and upland sporting tradition takes place April 17–19, 2026 at the William P. McFadden Trust, 449 Steam Mill Road, Ellenburg, NY.
Hosted by BraeVal, the Cover Dog Classic brings together bird dog handlers, competitors, and spectators for a three-day event focused on the skill, endurance, and partnership between dogs and their handlers. Set across six wild bird courses, participants navigate dense woodland terrain as dogs are judged on their ability to locate, point, and hold wild birds such as ruffed grouse and woodcock.
Each competing team runs in 45-minute braces, with judges and spectators following along through natural cover to observe the precision and teamwork required in this style of field trial. Unlike traditional hunting events, no birds are harvested, with scoring based entirely on performance and instinct in authentic conditions.
In addition to the competition, the weekend includes a festive awards dinner recognizing top-performing dogs and handlers. Competitors also earn points toward the Grand National Invitational and Cover Dog standings, with prizes and giveaways available throughout the event.
The BraeVal Cover Dog Classic highlights the heritage and challenge of cover dog trials, offering both seasoned participants and newcomers an opportunity to experience this unique sporting tradition.
Entry fee is $85. For more information or to register, contact Gregor McCluskey at 860-539-9696 or email gregor@braeval.net.
