How AARP is Fighting for Connecticut at the Capitol

When Connecticut families are squeezed by rising prescription costs, growing utility bills, or digital scams targeting the most vulnerable, AARP doesn’t just speak up, they show up.

During the 2025 legislative session, AARP worked tirelessly to push forward a powerful agenda focused on protecting older adults, strengthening consumer protections, and making life more affordable for residents across the state.

Thanks to the efforts of thousands of AARP members, volunteers, and legislative partners, several important reforms passed this year, improving everything from prescription pricing to digital safety and utility bills.

Key Victories from the 2025 Session

Here are just a few of the major wins AARP helped deliver for Connecticut residents:

Lower Prescription Drug Costs

New legislation caps price hikes on generic and off-patent medications, expands Connecticut’s ability to bulk purchase drugs, and opens the door to importing safe, lower-cost medications from Canada. Patients can now also receive credit toward deductibles when using discount programs like ArrayRx.

Utility Reform That Saves Millions

New energy legislation is projected to save Connecticut consumers $325 to $350 million annually, bringing long-overdue affordability, accountability, and transparency to the state’s energy system.

Stronger Digital & Financial Protections

AARP helped pass measures to combat price gouging, crackdown on predatory lending, and create a framework to address virtual currency scams—an increasingly common tactic used by fraudsters. Another new law sets caps and rules for earned wage access programs to prevent abusive fees.

Support for Long-Term Care Residents & Veterans

Connecticut now prohibits discrimination in long-term care facilities, including protections for LGBTQ+ residents. Another bill will investigate how unaccredited agents might be misleading veterans while helping them access benefits.

Expanding Access & Equity

From funding affordable internet through a new Net Equity Program to extending retirement savings options for care workers, AARP’s advocacy continues to make Connecticut more inclusive and secure for people of all ages.

Consumer Rights Get a Boost

From banning hidden fees and enforcing clearer cancellation policies to protecting tenants in mobile home parks, new consumer protection laws passed with AARP’s backing ensure residents know their rights and aren’t taken advantage of.

These Wins Don’t Happen Without You

AARP Connecticut’s legislative success is powered by real people taking real action—from sending emails to lawmakers and attending Capitol hearings to simply sharing their personal stories. In the final hours of the 2025 session, 1,000 e-advocates contacted legislators to help pass House Bill 7192 on prescription drug reform.

Nora Duncan, AARP Connecticut’s State Director, credited volunteers for the momentum:
“From the volunteers who join us at the Capitol to the thousands of e-advocates across the state—everyone makes a difference.”
