Theodate Pope’s Highfield: A History at Mattatuck Museum
June 13 - December 13

Explore the story of Highfield, a Middlebury estate designed by pioneering Connecticut architect Theodate Pope Riddle for Joseph and Elizabeth Chamberlain in 1911–1914. Family album photographs from the Chamberlains’ early years at the estate and materials related to Pope’s English Arts and Crafts style highlight her design and career. Pope became one of the first five women admitted to the American Institute of Architects in 1918 and one of Connecticut’s first licensed female architects in 1933. The exhibition is on view June 13 through December 13, 2026, in the museum’s History Gallery.
Mattatuck Museum is located at 144 West Main St., Waterbury, CT.
