They Dare to Learn: Portraits of Courage – Workshop at Connecticut Museum of Culture and History

History, storytelling, and creative expression come together during They Dare to Learn: Portraits of Courage – Workshop at the Connecticut Museum of Culture and History on June 18 from 6 pm to 7:30 pm. Led by Master Teaching Artist Ed Johnetta Miller, the workshop will explore the story of the young Black women who attended Prudence Crandall’s School for Young Black Girls in Canterbury, Connecticut, despite facing hostility, danger, and injustice in their pursuit of education.

Through storytelling and the presentation of her commemorative quilts, Miller will share the experiences and resilience of these students while highlighting the importance of remembrance and historical reflection. Following the presentation, participants will create their own collage portraits using a variety of materials and images to honor themes of courage, learning, and perseverance.

The hands-on workshop is designed for all experience levels, and participants will be able to take their completed artwork home. All materials are included with admission.

The Connecticut Museum of Culture and History is located at 1 Elizabeth Street, Hartford, CT 06105. Admission is $10 for general admission, $5 for Museum members, and free for member levels of $150 and above.
