SUMMARY:Hannah and Her Daughters at the First Church of Glastonbury
DESCRIPTION:The Connecticut Museum of Culture and History presents Hannah and Her Daughters\, an original musical performance inspired by manuscripts from the museum’s own collection. This unique concert\, composed by C. Leonard Raybon\, Associate Professor of Music at Tulane University\, brings to life the writings and legacy of Hannah Hadassah Hickok\, matriarch of the renowned Smith family of Glastonbury\, Connecticut. \nWhile researching for another project\, Raybon uncovered Hannah’s journals and writings\, which revealed a vivid and complex personality—spirited\, self-aware\, and ahead of her time. Her descendants\, the Smith sisters\, became nationally known in the 1870s for refusing to pay taxes as a protest against women’s disenfranchisement. Drawing inspiration from these remarkable figures\, Raybon has composed a wholly original program that weaves Hannah’s words\, poetry\, and opinions with musical interpretations of her daughters’ activism and ideals. \nThe concert will take place on Saturday\, November 8\, 2025\, from 7:30 to 9:00 pm at First Church of Glastonbury\, 2183 Main Street\, Glastonbury. Following the one-hour performance\, attendees are invited to a post-show discussion with composer Leonard Raybon and Diane Hoover of the Glastonbury Historical Society. \nAdmission is free\, but advance registration is requested. More details and RSVP information are available at connecticutmuseum.org.
