Have you been looking for an affordable digital scale for weighing very light items like herbs, spices or even jewelry? We received the Smart Weigh digital scale for review and found that it does the job nicely and does not required any setup or special knowledge to use it. The Smart Weigh Digital Pocket Scale is very lightweight and small enough to fit in a kitchen drawer. It comes with two AAA batteries already installed. A small instructional manual in multiple languages is also included.
To turn the Smart Weigh scale on, just hold down the top button on the right and wait for the light to appear. It has an auto shutoff after two minutes of non-use of you can just hold the same button down to turn it off manually. Unfortunately, we did not find a way to disable the auto-off feature so this could be a problem for someone. It has a nice blue backlight LCD screen so it is easy to read. You can change the type of measurement from ounces (OZ) to Troy Ounce (OZT for precious metals), Jewelers pennyweight (dwt), grain (GN) or carats (CT).
It is suggested that you calibrate it first. You will need a 1000 gram item to do this. This is easy to do, just use your fingers to apply some pressure and then release.
Note: in the stock image above the buttons are reversed. My ON/OFF button was at the top right
The Smart Weigh digital scale features a stainless steel platform and has chrome buttons. It also comes with a plastic lid to keep it protected when not in use and this plastic lid also doubles as a tray you can use to put bulky things in. Just use the tare feature to cancel out the weight of the tray first. There is a lock weight reading button so if you remove an item you can still see the weight. The frame of the Smart Weigh scale and the display are made of hard plastic and it measures 5″ x 4″ x 0.6″ and only weighs 8 ounces.
Not only is the Smart Weigh digital scale good in the kitchen, you could also use it to weigh small items like jewelry if you sell online or eBay. You could also use it for weighing coins. It has a cool counting feature so you can have it give you the count of a group of things, say coins, if you don’t want to count them all first. Just put your items on the tray and setup the scale to count.
Smart Weigh says their scales are “manufactured with high precision sensors to provide the most accurate weight readings; weighs up to 500 grams in 0.01 Increments”. The calibration process is easy and weighs items from 1 tenth of a gram to 2 kg (or about 4.4 lbs). Weighing performance was quite good for this scale.
The Smart Weigh scales will come in handy for us in the kitchen but I can also see others uses for it in the future. It is very affordable, ranging in price from $14.99 to $19.99. You can purchase it from Amazon.com and get free Prime shipping
