Rooftop 120, sporting New England’s largest four season rooftop, invited us up to meet their new chef and sample some of his new creations.
Disclosure: We were invited to a media dinner at Rooftop 120. Your experience may be different than ours. Visit Rooftop 120 and try it out for yourself.
Rooftop 120 is located at 120 Hebron Avenue in Glastonbury’s Eric Town Square. The main attraction is the year-round rooftop and outdoor patio providing stunning views of surrounding Glastonbury, CT. While taking in the views, one can enjoy a drink from their array of martinis, wine, beer and specialty cocktails. Or satisfy your hunger with a selection of their offerings from the raw bar, small plates or entrees. Order several plates to share with friends while sitting around the fire pit and basting in the atmosphere. If the weather is not agreeable, find a spot enclosed river rock bar to enjoy the venue.
Arriving at Rooftop 120, we settled into our table in the lounge are with other attendees and offered champagne topped with either a fresh strawberry or blueberry. The champagne was given to us as a sample of their Birthday Promotion where they offer a complimentary bottle of champagne to parties of 4 or more. Great way to start the festivities. While sipping our champagne, we sampled the Mediterranean Shrimp Bruschetta: grilled shrimp, olives, artichokes, tomatoes, basil, peppers, and feta all sitting atop a crispy bread.
We then adventured into the Dining area where new Executive Chef Dan Fortin came out and chatted with us a few minutes explaining where he has taken Rooftop 120’s menu. He introduced us to the samples from the menu that we would be trying. Chef Dan’s menu focuses around a progressive new take on American cuisine.
Chef Dan offered up to us:
- Aji Chili Rubbed Steak with grilled zucchini, peppadew peppers, and chimichurri
- Jerked spice tuna topped with tropical fruit salsa and accompanied by fried plantains
- Soy Ginger- marainated avocado halves topped with a tempura fried oyster on a bed of Yuzu Harissa Aioli
- Red Beet and Goat Cheese Bon Bons served with shaved fennel orange salad and a Medjool date reduction
Each was flavorful and well presented. The steak was cooked nicely with a slight spicy rub. The tuna was fresh and balanced well with the salsa. The oyster was prepared well. The red beet and goat cheese paired nicely together.
Unfortunately for us, but fortunately for Rooftop 120, the nice weather influenced a busy Happy Hour that day and Master Mixologist Tyler Devecchis was unable to demo a couple of signature drinks. However, we were able to sample one of Rooftop120’s signature martinis, 50 Shades of Glastonbury.
We did wander out to the enclosed bar and patio area to have a look where standing room only will be the norm during the warm weather ahead. The outside patio looked inviting, especially on a warm summer evening after a hectic day of work.
Rooftop 120 holds several different events throughout the year, so be sure to check to see what they have going on. Flower Power Happy Hour is one event, being held April 21st from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, where you can join Happy Hour specials and a Wildflower Martini. During this event, you can create a beautiful floral arrangement and learn a little lesson in floral design.
Mark your calendars for the Kickoff to Rooftop Party being held May 14th to the 16th, where they celebrate the opening of the patio for the first time. Highlights of the party include a live band, drink specials and a spring inspired menu.
Rooftop 120 has live music and entertainment every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings. Happy hour is every weekday from 5:00 to 6:30 pm., but get there early as the place fills up quickly.
