They came, they ran, they conquered! Those who came to the Reebok Spartan race this past Saturday, June 28, at Mohegan Sun Casino were taking names, kicking butt and conquering the Spartan beast. As soon as you arrive you sign the waiver that states, “the risk of injury and death from participation in a Spartan Race is significant. These risks include drowning, near-drowning, sprains, strains, fractures, injuries related to hot or cold temperatures, injuries from vehicles, contact with poisonous plants, animal bites, and strings. All participants also acknowledge the risk of heart attack, permanent paralysis, and death. Acknowledging this fully, I knowingly and freely assume and accept all risks, both known and unknown.” Yeh, I guess that about sums it up. Co-founder Joe De Sena and author of the best selling book, Spartan Up!, has helped to create an event that has, for many, become a lifestyle and as he states in his book, “This is also a pretty good waiver that everyone should sign just to participate in life.”
Mohegan Sun sponsored and was the venue host for the Connecticut Reebok Spartan Race on June 28, 2014. This was the first Connecticut event for Spartan Race, the world’s largest leading global obstacle race series. The course stretched over 3 miles through the natural Connecticut woodlands, intermixed with 15 + obstacles that included a spear throw, barbed wire crawl, over-and-through, and rope climbs. The final obstacle was a fire jump where participants leap over flames. All finishers receive a medal and prizes were awarded to the top athletes.
The course ran through Mohegan Sun and Fort Shantok varying from single-track trails to running along the scenic Thames River. Fail to complete an obstacle and one had the pleasure of performing 30 burpees, Spartan Race’s signature exercise!
The Spartan Kids was held midday with a special obstacle course setup in the parking lot just for children. Each Spartan Race features a Kids Spartan Races for children ages 5 to 13. These races feature cargo nets, balance beam, and mud. The “Jr. Varsity” mini obstacle courses typically last 1/2 mile, with the “Varsity” children completing two laps to make a 1 mile course. Children who complete the courses receive finisher medals.
Kevin Brown, Chairman of the Mohegan Tribal Council, was extremely excited about hosting the Reebok Spartan Race. “I am very glad to hear that our reservation land has been chosen for the Reebok Spartan Race. Let’s face it – the Mohegan Tribe traces a lineage and a heritage of brave Native American warriors who lived, worked, and fought in these Eastern Woodlands. The Race will bring a modern challenge into historic territory – it’s a great fit.”
