SUMMARY:Woodland Academy: Invasive Plant Species in Connecticut: Identification\, Ecology\, and Management at Great Mountain Forest
DESCRIPTION:Landowners\, conservation practitioners\, municipal staff\, and land trust representatives can learn practical strategies for addressing one of Connecticut’s most significant environmental challenges during Invasive Plant Species in Connecticut: Identification\, Ecology\, and Management on October 7 from 9 am to 4 pm at Great Mountain Forest. \nThis full-day Woodland Academy course examines the invasive plant species that threaten forest health\, biodiversity\, and natural regeneration across the state. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how invasive plants spread\, the ecological impacts they have on native ecosystems\, and the most effective approaches for managing infestations in forests and natural areas. \nThrough a combination of classroom instruction and field-based learning\, attendees will develop skills in identifying Connecticut’s most common invasive forest plants and evaluating management options based on site-specific conditions. Discussions will focus on practical techniques that can help restore and protect native plant communities while supporting long-term forest stewardship goals. \nThe course will be led by experts in forestry and plant ecology\, including Jeff Ward\, Chief Scientist Emeritus at The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station; Betsy Corrigan\, Botanist with TRC Companies\, Inc.; and Kate Regan-Loomis\, Forester at Great Mountain Forest. \nThe program has been approved for two Connecticut Forest Practitioner continuing education credits. Participants should be comfortable walking off-trail on uneven terrain and spending several hours outdoors during field exercises. \nCoffee\, tea\, water\, and snacks will be provided. Participants should bring their own lunch. \nThe workshop will take place at the historic Yale Camp within Great Mountain Forest\, accessed through the forest’s West Gate on Chattleton Road off Canaan Mountain Road in Falls Village\, CT. Detailed directions will be provided to registered participants. \nRegistration is $25 per person. \nFor registration and additional information\, visit https://greatmountainforest.org/invasive-plant-species-in-connecticut/.

SUMMARY:Sarah Treadwell: Connecticut Mom\, American Patriot at Weston History & Culture Center
DESCRIPTION:A new exhibition exploring the life and legacy of a Revolutionary War-era Connecticut woman will be on view from May 9 through December 17\, 2026 at the Weston History & Culture Center\, 104 Weston Road\, Weston\, CT 06883. Parking and entrance are accessible from High Acre Road through the Visitor’s Center. \nSarah Treadwell: Connecticut Mom\, American Patriot highlights the story of Sarah Treadwell and the important yet often overlooked role women played during the American Revolution. Through personal history and historical context\, the exhibit explores Sarah’s resilience as a wife\, mother\, and community member while her family took an active role in the fight for independence. \nVisitors will learn about daily life during and after the Revolutionary War\, the experiences of veterans and widows navigating the pension process\, and the challenges faced by families living in the North Fairfield area\, which later became Weston and Easton. The exhibit also sheds light on the broader contributions women made to sustaining homes and communities during America’s founding years. \nCurated by Mark Brennan with research assistance from the Historical Society of Easton\, the exhibition is funded in part by a grant from Connecticut Humanities in recognition of America’s 250th anniversary. \nThe exhibit is open during public hours every Thursday from 1 pm to 4 pm and on the first and last Sunday of each month from 1 pm to 4 pm. The museum is closed on holidays and holiday weekends. \nFor more information\, visit westoncthistory.org.
