SUMMARY:Yokai Parade: Supernatural Monsters from Japan at Central Connecticut State University
DESCRIPTION:Japanese folklore\, art\, and mythology take center stage this summer as Central Connecticut State University welcomes Yokai Parade: Supernatural Monsters from Japan\, a traveling exhibition from the Japan Foundation. The exhibition will be celebrated with an opening reception on June 23 from 5 pm to 7 pm on the second floor of the Elihu Burritt Library in New Britain. \nPresented in partnership with the Consulate General of Japan in Boston\, the exhibition explores the fascinating world of yokai—supernatural creatures\, mysterious beings\, and unexplained phenomena that have captured the imagination of people in Japan for centuries. Special guest remarks will be delivered during the opening reception by Consul General Seiichirō Takahashi\, the head diplomat of the Consulate General of Japan in Boston. \nThrough historical and contemporary works\, Yokai Parade examines how these legendary figures have evolved over time. Visitors will discover how creatures once associated with fear and mystery gradually became beloved and recognizable figures in popular culture. \nOrganized by the Japan Foundation as part of its international traveling exhibition program\, the exhibition highlights Japan’s rich artistic traditions while promoting cultural understanding and exchange. \nThe Elihu Burritt Library is located on the campus of Central Connecticut State University\, 1615 Stanley Street\, New Britain\, CT 06050. Parking for the event will be available in the Student Center parking lot. \nAdmission to the opening reception and exhibition is free. \nFor more information\, visit https://www.ccsu.edu/event/yokai-parade-exhibition-opening.

SUMMARY:Sarah Treadwell: Connecticut Mom\, American Patriot at Weston History & Culture Center
DESCRIPTION:A new exhibition exploring the life and legacy of a Revolutionary War-era Connecticut woman will be on view from May 9 through July 30\, 2026 at the Weston History & Culture Center\, 104 Weston Road\, Weston\, CT 06883. Parking and entrance are accessible from High Acre Road through the Visitor’s Center. \nSarah Treadwell: Connecticut Mom\, American Patriot highlights the story of Sarah Treadwell and the important yet often overlooked role women played during the American Revolution. Through personal history and historical context\, the exhibit explores Sarah’s resilience as a wife\, mother\, and community member while her family took an active role in the fight for independence. \nVisitors will learn about daily life during and after the Revolutionary War\, the experiences of veterans and widows navigating the pension process\, and the challenges faced by families living in the North Fairfield area\, which later became Weston and Easton. The exhibit also sheds light on the broader contributions women made to sustaining homes and communities during America’s founding years. \nCurated by Mark Brennan with research assistance from the Historical Society of Easton\, the exhibition is funded in part by a grant from Connecticut Humanities in recognition of America’s 250th anniversary. \nThe exhibit is open during public hours every Thursday from 1 pm to 4 pm and on the first and last Sunday of each month from 1 pm to 4 pm. The museum is closed on holidays and holiday weekends. \nFor more information\, visit westoncthistory.org.

SUMMARY:Rochambeau Monument Dedication at Meadowview Park
DESCRIPTION:The Middlebury Historical Society will commemorate a significant chapter in Revolutionary War history with the unveiling and dedication of the Rochambeau Monument on June 27\, 2026\, from 1 pm to 3 pm at Meadowview Park. The event coincides with the 250th anniversary of the French army’s encampment on Breakneck Hill in Middlebury and serves as a tribute to the French soldiers whose contributions helped secure American independence. \nThe new monument honors the 5\,200 troops led by General Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur\, Comte de Rochambeau\, who marched through Connecticut and camped in Middlebury while traveling to and from Yorktown during the Revolutionary War. Their alliance with American forces proved instrumental in the defeat of British forces and the successful conclusion of the war. \nCreated by Prospect sculptor Tony Falcone using the traditional lost-wax bronze casting method\, the seven-foot-tall monument depicts an unnamed French soldier rather than General Rochambeau himself. The design recognizes the thousands of ordinary soldiers whose service and sacrifice contributed to the American cause. The monument will stand as a lasting landmark along the National Washington–Rochambeau Revolutionary Route. \nThe dedication ceremony will feature state and national dignitaries\, representatives from French organizations\, and members of the National Park Service\, highlighting the enduring friendship between France and the United States. Taking place just days before the nation’s semiquincentennial celebration on July 4\, the event offers an opportunity to reflect on the international cooperation that helped shape American history. \nThe ceremony is free and open to the public. Meadowview Park is located at 190 Southford Road\, Middlebury\, CT 06762. For more information\, visit www.middleburyhistoricalsociety.org.
