DESCRIPTION:Fairfield University Art Museum will present Hieroglyphs to Hype: The Modern Afterlife of Ancient Egypt from September 18 through December 12\, 2026\, in the Bellarmine Hall Galleries. The exhibition explores the lasting influence of ancient Egyptian art and culture on modern imagination\, design\, and popular culture through paintings\, prints\, photography\, sculpture\, decorative arts\, and contemporary works spanning the early 19th century to today. \nCurated by Museum Registrar Megan Paqua\, the exhibition examines the phenomenon known as “Egyptomania\,” tracing how ancient Egyptian imagery has been interpreted\, misunderstood\, commercialized\, and reimagined across generations. The exhibition includes works ranging from 19th-century paintings and decorative objects to contemporary art addressing identity\, race\, colonialism\, and cultural memory. \nFeatured artists and objects include David Roberts’ 1849 painting The Hypostyle Hall of the Great Temple of Abu Simbel\, Egypt\, Audrey Flack’s Lux Eternal\, and works by Lorraine O’Grady\, Esmeralda Kosmatopoulos\, Sara Sallam\, Jane Hammond\, and Fred Wilson. The exhibition also explores popular themes including Cleopatra\, mummies\, King Tut\, and the influence of ancient Egypt in film\, fashion\, media\, and visual culture. \nLenders to the exhibition include the Yale Center for British Art\, Yale University Art Gallery\, the Wadsworth Atheneum\, the Hood Museum of Art\, artists\, and private collectors. An illustrated exhibition catalogue will be available in the galleries. \nA series of free public programs will accompany the exhibition\, including curator talks\, gallery tours\, lectures\, and family events. Special bandanas will also be available for Homeward Bound CT alumni. A Beer & Wine Tent featuring Connecticut breweries\, wineries\, and cider producers will be open from 11:30 am to 4 pm Saturday and 11:30 am to 3 pm Sunday. Beer and wine tickets are $10 and include two flights or two full pours; valid ID is required. Lure course tickets are $5 per dog. \nAdmission is $5 per individual or $10 per family. All friendly dogs are welcome\, but this is not an adoption event. SUMMARY:Discovery Sundays at Florence Griswold Museum
DESCRIPTION:Hands-on art activities invite visitors of all ages to explore creativity during Discovery Sundays at the Florence Griswold Museum\, held Sundays from April through September\, from 11 am to 4 pm. \nFamilies and other visitors can drop in at the Hartman Education Center and choose from a variety of activities designed to encourage artistic exploration. Participants are provided with canvas\, a palette\, paint\, brushes and a smock\, along with guidance on color mixing and painting techniques. \nWhen the weather is suitable\, guests can take their creativity outdoors for plein air painting\, following in the tradition of the artists who gathered at Miss Florence’s more than 100 years ago. The program offers a hands-on way to discover why the Griswold House became such an important place for American artists. \nDiscovery Sundays are family-friendly\, and visitors of all ages are encouraged to participate. The program is included with museum admission\, and no advance reservations are required. \nDiscovery Sundays take place at the Florence Griswold Museum\, 96 Lyme Street\, Old Lyme\, Connecticut 06371\, on Sundays through September from 11 am to 4 pm.
