DESCRIPTION:Discover the history of herbal medicine in Colonial America through a two-part program led by Dr. Eugene Zampieron\, known as Dr. Z\, at The Glebe House Museum & Gertrude Jekyll Garden in Woodbury. \nThe series begins online on Wednesday\, September 23\, at 6 pm with a presentation introducing the foundations of colonial herbal medicine. Dr. Z will explore the plants and practices that shaped early American healing traditions while highlighting the cultural and scientific roots of herbal care. \nThe program continues in person on Saturday\, September 26\, at 11 am with a hands-on workshop at the historic Glebe House\, which dates to the 1740s. Participants will take a guided garden tour to identify medicinal and edible plants while learning about the folklore\, chemistry\, and traditional uses of herbs found throughout the garden. \nThe workshop will also include hands-on preparation of two traditional remedies using herbs gathered from the garden\, foraged from the wild\, and purchased locally. Participants will make a healing salve and choose between a Colonial-style cough remedy or an immune-supporting tonic. Each participant will take home their handmade preparations along with knowledge of how to recreate them at home. \nThe program fee is $65 per person and includes both sessions\, equipment use\, and all supplies. SUMMARY:The First: Witchcraft in Connecticut at Old Town Hall
DESCRIPTION:Connecticut’s early witchcraft trials unfolded across multiple communities and decades\, long before the infamous Salem trials of 1692. The Glebe House Museum presents The First: Witchcraft in Connecticut\, a live historical presentation examining the state’s earliest witchcraft prosecutions and the lives affected by accusations\, imprisonment\, exile and execution. \nHosted by “The Witch of Woodbury\,” Moll Cramer\, a historical figure who was accused of witchcraft and banished from town\, the presentation places her story within the broader history of Connecticut’s witchcraft trials. The program also explores the experiences of Thomas Allyn\, Rebecca Greensmith and Katherine Harrison\, offering a closer look at the people behind these historical cases. The expanded presentation was developed by the Glebe House Museum and historian and volunteer Linda Barr-Gale\, with support from Newtown Savings Bank. \nThe program will take place on Saturday\, October 3\, 2026\, at Old Town Hall\, located at 5 Mountain Road in Woodbury. Doors open at 5 pm\, and the program begins at 5:30 pm. The presentation runs approximately two hours\, including an intermission\, with general admission seating. Complimentary refreshments will be served during intermission. \nAdvance tickets are $25 per person\, while tickets purchased at the door are $30. Advance purchase is recommended because seating is limited. The program is not recommended for children under 14 due to its approximately two-hour runtime and subject matter. \nGuests who need additional accommodations can contact the Glebe House Museum at 203-263-2855.
