SUMMARY:Working for the Revolution: Patriot Women’s Lives During the War at Wilton Historical Society
DESCRIPTION:Women played important roles in the American Revolution\, and their contributions will be explored during a presentation by professor emerita and publisher Kathy Hermes on Thursday\, August 20\, from 7 to 8 pm at the Wilton Historical Society. \nUsing original sources including newspapers\, court records\, letters\, and pension records\, Dr. Hermes will examine how Indigenous\, Anglo-European\, and African-descended women contributed to the Patriot cause politically\, economically\, intellectually\, and even militarily. The presentation will highlight the diverse experiences and contributions of women during the Revolutionary War. \nKatherine Hermes is the publisher and executive director of Connecticut Explored magazine and professor emerita of history at Central Connecticut State University\, where she taught Early American history for 25 years. She has also created and contributed to several digital public history projects\, including Forgotten Voices of the Revolutionary War: People of Color and the Redding Encampment\, 1778-1779. \nThe presentation is free for Wilton Historical Society members and $10 for non-members. Membership is available for $75.

DESCRIPTION:The sounds of the American Revolutionary Era will take center stage during a presentation by Christine Hauck on Wednesday\, September 2\, from 7 to 8 pm at the Wilton Historical Society. \nAs the nation commemorates the 250th Anniversary of the American Revolution\, Hauck will explore the music that residents of Wilton may have heard in 1776. Her research examines the composers and music makers of the era\, as well as popular musical traditions ranging from patriotic and marching songs to social and dance music\, psalms\, and symphonies. \nHauck is a visual arts educator\, lecturer\, multimedia artist\, and award-winning designer with advanced degrees in the history of decorative arts and curatorial studies. She was formerly an adjunct professor at the University of Connecticut in digital media. \nRegistration is required. Admission is free for Wilton Historical Society members and $10 for non-members. SUMMARY:Emancipation and Freedom: People of African Descent and the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:The experiences and historical significance of Black Americans during the American Revolution will be explored during a virtual presentation on Thursday\, September 10\, from 7 to 8 pm. \nThe presentation will examine how Black Patriots and other people of African descent from the Revolutionary era are remembered and memorialized. With an estimated 5\,000 to 10\,000 Black men serving in the military during the American War of Independence\, the discussion will consider the narratives\, perspectives\, and historical frameworks used to understand their experiences and contributions. \nThe presentation will be led by Robert Bellinger\, a public historian with a Ph.D. in history from Boston College and proprietor of Righting Histories. Dr. Bellinger has worked on numerous public history projects focused on African American history\, local histories\, and historic sites\, including the National Park Service project “The Experience of Africans During the American Revolution.” He is also the founder of the African Seed Exchange\, which documents the history of African food crops introduced to North America by Africans and African Americans. \nThe virtual event is free for Wilton Historical Society members and $10 for non-members.
