SUMMARY:Fall for Park at Park Road
DESCRIPTION:Fall for Park is a free community fall festival celebrating the businesses\, residents\, and character of West Hartford’s Park Road neighborhood. The event takes place Saturday\, October 3\, from 10 am to 4 pm and builds on the tradition of the former Park Road Parade with family-friendly activities\, special promotions\, live entertainment\, and an antique trolley connecting visitors with participating businesses. \nThe event will take place without a street closure. Visitors can park once and use the trolley\, which will have designated stops along Park Road. A program of activities will be available at trolley stops and participating businesses\, with more than 16 businesses currently signed up. \nParticipating businesses include A Strand Ahead\, AC Peterson Farms\, Black Diamond Body Piercing\, Ceara Market\, Charming Nails & Spa\, Effie’s Family Restaurant\, The Eight Gates Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine\, Halls Market\, Health is Wealth Juice Bar\, J Renee Coffee Roasters\, Joey’s Pizza Pie\, Lucky Tattoo\, Playhouse on Park\, Portobello Restaurant\, River Bend Bookshop\, Salt + Lime Mexican Cantina\, Smoke Public House\, Spits Mediterranean Street Food\, West Hartford Second Chance Shop\, The White Rabbit\, and others. SUMMARY:Loyalty and Zeal: Algonkians of the Revolution at Weston History & Culture Center
DESCRIPTION:The Weston History & Culture Center will explore the contributions and experiences of Algonkian peoples during the American Revolution with Loyalty and Zeal: Algonkians of the Revolution on Sunday\, October 4\, from 2 pm to 4 pm. Guests can stop by anytime during the program for a demonstration and discussion led by Drew Shuptar-Rayvis\, a citizen of the Pocomoke Indian Nation. \nThe program will examine the material culture and trade of Algonkian peoples during the Revolution\, as well as the complex political choices surrounding patriotism\, toryism\, and neutrality. Shuptar-Rayvis will bring artifacts and reproduction pieces and wear traditional clothing while discussing the contributions\, struggles\, and sacrifices of Algonkian peoples during the War of American Independence. Guests will also have an opportunity to ask questions. \nThe free event will be held outdoors\, weather permitting\, with the program moving indoors in the event of rain. Registration is encouraged. SUMMARY:The New England Vampire Folk Belief: The Archaeological Record
DESCRIPTION:The archaeological evidence behind New England’s historic vampire folklore will be explored in a virtual presentation by Dr. Nicholas F. Bellantoni\, Connecticut state archaeologist emeritus. The program examines cases from the late 18th and 19th centuries when corpses were exhumed and altered in attempts to stop the spread of consumption\, the historical term for pulmonary tuberculosis. \nBellantoni will discuss a significant archaeological discovery from an eastern Connecticut family burial ground\, where researchers uncovered the rearranged skeletal remains of an adult male showing evidence of tuberculosis infection. The presentation draws on archaeological excavations\, American literature\, folklore and forensic research to explore how these findings help explain vampire-related folk beliefs in Connecticut. \nDr. Bellantoni is a former Connecticut state archaeologist and associate research professor in anthropology at the University of Connecticut. His research includes forensic archaeology and faunal analysis in eastern North America. His latest book\, Vampires and Gallstones: Bioarchaeology and Forensic Science of Connecticut’s Historic Burial Grounds\, is scheduled for publication in November 2026. \nThe talk will be held virtually at 7 pm on Thursday\, October 8.
