This engaging presentation explores the remarkable story of the 1876 Centennial Exhibition\, America’s first world’s fair and one of the most influential events of the nineteenth century. \nDrawing from his latest work\, historian Fergus Bordewich will examine how the Great Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia celebrated the nation’s first hundred years while reflecting the challenges and opportunities shaping its future. The fair attracted nearly 10 million visitors\, including notable figures such as Mark Twain\, Frederick Douglass\, P. T. Barnum\, and Emperor Dom Pedro II of Brazil. Visitors encountered groundbreaking innovations including the telephone\, typewriter\, and Heinz Tomato Ketchup\, all symbols of a rapidly changing America. \nThe discussion also explores the political\, social\, and economic tensions of the era\, from Reconstruction and labor unrest to the fight for women’s rights and conflicts on the western frontier. Additional themed weeks include Archiving America: 250 Years of Stories from July 6 through July 10\, Passport to Paint from July 13 through July 17\, Art Safari from July 20 through July 24\, The Art of the Experiment from July 27 through July 31\, and Art Unbound from August 3 through August 7. \nThe program encourages campers to experiment with artistic techniques\, explore cultural traditions\, and discover storytelling through art\, science\, movement\, and sound. Activities throughout the summer are designed to inspire imagination while helping children build creative confidence in a Museum setting. \nThe Mattatuck Museum is located at 144 West Main Street\, Waterbury\, CT 06702. Camp admission is $210 for the general public\, $205 for Museum members\, and $105 for Kids Adventure Passholders\, who receive a 50 percent discount on School’s OUT! pricing. Registration and payment are accepted on a rolling basis\, though no refunds will be issued after May 21. Participants will work with professional teachers\, teaching artists\, and emerging student-teacher-artists from Cooperative Arts & Humanities High School\, gaining hands-on experience in a variety of creative disciplines while collaborating with fellow campers. \nTwo sessions are available during the summer.
