SUMMARY:Camp Matt at Mattatuck Museum
DESCRIPTION:Creativity\, history\, and hands-on discovery come together during Camp Matt at the Mattatuck Museum\, running from June 29 through August 7. The Museum’s School’s OUT! Summer Adventures Camp will feature six themed weeks designed to immerse children in artmaking\, storytelling\, history\, and interactive learning experiences inspired by the Museum’s galleries and exhibitions. \nCamp sessions run daily from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm\, with free before and after care available from 8 am to 9 am and from 3:30 pm to 5 pm. Each week introduces campers to a different theme through unique art techniques\, creative exploration\, and engaging activities. \nThe first week\, Backstage Pass\, runs June 29 through July 2 and explores the connection between music and visual art through the Museum’s concert poster exhibition. Additional themed weeks include Archiving America: 250 Years of Stories from July 6 through July 10\, Passport to Paint from July 13 through July 17\, Art Safari from July 20 through July 24\, The Art of the Experiment from July 27 through July 31\, and Art Unbound from August 3 through August 7. \nThe program encourages campers to experiment with artistic techniques\, explore cultural traditions\, and discover storytelling through art\, science\, movement\, and sound. This engaging presentation explores the remarkable story of the 1876 Centennial Exhibition\, America’s first world’s fair and one of the most influential events of the nineteenth century. \nDrawing from his latest work\, historian Fergus Bordewich will examine how the Great Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia celebrated the nation’s first hundred years while reflecting the challenges and opportunities shaping its future. The fair attracted nearly 10 million visitors\, including notable figures such as Mark Twain\, Frederick Douglass\, P. T. Barnum\, and Emperor Dom Pedro II of Brazil. Visitors encountered groundbreaking innovations including the telephone\, typewriter\, and Heinz Tomato Ketchup\, all symbols of a rapidly changing America. \nThe discussion also explores the political\, social\, and economic tensions of the era\, from Reconstruction and labor unrest to the fight for women’s rights and conflicts on the western frontier. Through the stories of Rutherford B. Hayes\, Alexander Graham Bell\, railroad executive Tom Scott\, and sculptor Edmonia Lewis\, Bordewich reveals how the Centennial Exhibition reflected a nation at a crossroads. \nFergus Bordewich is the author of numerous acclaimed works of American history\, including Klan War\, The First Congress\, America’s Great Debate\, and Bound for Canaan.
