Guests can stop by anytime during the program for a demonstration and discussion led by Drew Shuptar-Rayvis\, a citizen of the Pocomoke Indian Nation. \nThe program will examine the material culture and trade of Algonkian peoples during the Revolution\, as well as the complex political choices surrounding patriotism\, toryism\, and neutrality. Shuptar-Rayvis will bring artifacts and reproduction pieces and wear traditional clothing while discussing the contributions\, struggles\, and sacrifices of Algonkian peoples during the War of American Independence. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how invasive plants spread\, the ecological impacts they have on native ecosystems\, and the most effective approaches for managing infestations in forests and natural areas. \nThrough a combination of classroom instruction and field-based learning\, attendees will develop skills in identifying Connecticut’s most common invasive forest plants and evaluating management options based on site-specific conditions. Discussions will focus on practical techniques that can help restore and protect native plant communities while supporting long-term forest stewardship goals. \nThe course will be led by experts in forestry and plant ecology\, including Jeff Ward\, Chief Scientist Emeritus at The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station; Betsy Corrigan\, Botanist with TRC Companies\, Inc.; and Kate Regan-Loomis\, Forester at Great Mountain Forest. \nThe program has been approved for two Connecticut Forest Practitioner continuing education credits. Participants should be comfortable walking off-trail on uneven terrain and spending several hours outdoors during field exercises. \nCoffee\, tea\, water\, and snacks will be provided. SUMMARY:The New England Vampire Folk Belief: The Archaeological Record
DESCRIPTION:The archaeological evidence behind New England’s historic vampire folklore will be explored in a virtual presentation by Dr. Nicholas F. Bellantoni\, Connecticut state archaeologist emeritus. The program examines cases from the late 18th and 19th centuries when corpses were exhumed and altered in attempts to stop the spread of consumption\, the historical term for pulmonary tuberculosis. \nBellantoni will discuss a significant archaeological discovery from an eastern Connecticut family burial ground\, where researchers uncovered the rearranged skeletal remains of an adult male showing evidence of tuberculosis infection. The presentation draws on archaeological excavations\, American literature\, folklore and forensic research to explore how these findings help explain vampire-related folk beliefs in Connecticut. \nDr. Bellantoni is a former Connecticut state archaeologist and associate research professor in anthropology at the University of Connecticut. His research includes forensic archaeology and faunal analysis in eastern North America. His latest book\, Vampires and Gallstones: Bioarchaeology and Forensic Science of Connecticut’s Historic Burial Grounds\, is scheduled for publication in November 2026. \nThe talk will be held virtually at 7 pm on Thursday\, October 8.
