DESCRIPTION:Fairfield University will dedicate She Wouldn’t Take Off Her Boots\, a bronze Holocaust memorial sculpture by artist Victoria Milstein\, on Thursday\, September 10. The sculpture honors five Jewish women who were murdered during the Holocaust and commemorates an extraordinary act of defiance in the face of certain death. \nThe sculpture depicts the five women alongside a bronze camera facing them\, symbolizing the Nazi photographer’s lens through which their final moments were documented. The memorial tells the story of Frume Purve\, who refused to remove her boots before her execution\, along with Sorella Epstein\, Roza Epstein\, Mia-Malka Epstein\, and Emma Epstein. Their courage and dignity have become a lasting symbol of resistance and the enduring strength of the human spirit. \nThe memorial is the second U.S. installation of Milstein’s work and is located between the Charles F. Dolan School of Business and Bellarmine Pond on the Fairfield University campus. The first installation was unveiled in Greensboro\, North Carolina\, in 2023. Fairfield’s sculpture was donated by Shoah Memorial Fairfield\, Connecticut\, which was established by Fairfield native Paul Burger after he encountered the original memorial. An accompanying endowment will support the sculpture’s maintenance and care in perpetuity. \nAn invitation-only dedication ceremony will take place from 5 to 5:30 pm on September 10\, with speakers including Fairfield University President Mark R. Nemec\, PhD\, Ambassador Deborah Lipstadt\, Paul Burger\, and Victoria Milstein. The ceremony will be followed by a ticketed lecture by Ambassador Lipstadt at 7:30 pm at the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts. The lecture\, “Art\, Memory\, History: The Holocaust and Its Lessons for Our Moment\,” is part of the Philip I. Eliasoph Open VISIONS Forum. \nThe sculpture itself is available for visitors to experience from dawn to dusk. It is located on the Fairfield University campus at 1073 North Benson Road\, Fairfield\, CT 06824\, with parking available at the Dolan School of Business and the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts. DESCRIPTION:The experiences and historical significance of Black Americans during the American Revolution will be explored during a virtual presentation on Thursday\, September 10\, from 7 to 8 pm. \nThe presentation will examine how Black Patriots and other people of African descent from the Revolutionary era are remembered and memorialized. With an estimated 5\,000 to 10\,000 Black men serving in the military during the American War of Independence\, the discussion will consider the narratives\, perspectives\, and historical frameworks used to understand their experiences and contributions. \nThe presentation will be led by Robert Bellinger\, a public historian with a Ph.D. in history from Boston College and proprietor of Righting Histories. Dr. Bellinger has worked on numerous public history projects focused on African American history\, local histories\, and historic sites\, including the National Park Service project “The Experience of Africans During the American Revolution.” He is also the founder of the African Seed Exchange\, which documents the history of African food crops introduced to North America by Africans and African Americans. \nThe virtual event is free for Wilton Historical Society members and $10 for non-members. During her time at the U.S. Department of State\, she led efforts to advance U.S. foreign policy addressing antisemitism around the world. \nBefore joining the State Department\, Lipstadt served as the Dorot Professor of Modern Jewish History and Holocaust Studies at Emory University’s Tam Institute for Jewish Studies\, which she helped found. She has taught at Emory for 30 years and currently holds the position of Distinguished University Professor. DESCRIPTION:The Yoko Miwa Trio returns to the Poli Club at Palace Theater on Friday\, September 11\, 2026\, with performances at 7 pm and 9 pm. The trio will be joined by special guest vocalist Mikayla Shirley for an evening of acclaimed jazz in an intimate setting. \nInternationally recognized pianist and composer Yoko Miwa has earned a reputation as a powerful and compelling performer. She was named a Rising Star Pianist in the 2022\, 2023 and 2024 DownBeat Critics Poll\, while the Yoko Miwa Trio’s 2021 album\, Songs of Joy\, reached No. 1 on national jazz radio charts and was named among the best jazz albums of 2021 in the DownBeat 86th Annual Readers Poll. \nFor more than a decade\, Miwa and her trio have performed regularly at major jazz clubs in Boston and at venues around the world. Miwa has also performed or recorded with notable artists including Sheila Jordan\, Slide Hampton\, Arturo Sandoval\, Esperanza Spalding and Terri Lyne Carrington. \nMiwa’s musical journey began in Japan\, where she was classically trained before auditioning for Berklee College of Music in the late 1990s. She unexpectedly earned a full scholarship and moved to Boston in 1997\, where she went on to build an international career while becoming a longtime member of Berklee’s piano faculty. \nThe performances take place at the Poli Club at Palace Theater\, 100 East Main Street\, Waterbury\, Connecticut. DESCRIPTION:Eastbound Theatre\, a division of the Milford Arts Council\, will present Noel Coward’s classic comedy Hay Fever from September 11 through September 26 at the MAC in Milford. Directed by CJ Nolan\, the production blends high farce with a comedy of manners for a lively look at family\, wealth\, and narcissism. \nSet in an English country house\, the play follows the four eccentric members of the Bliss family as each independently invites a guest to spend the weekend. When the guests are subjected to the family’s outrageous behavior and bad manners\, they eventually flee\, while the Blisses remain absorbed in their own family quarrel and barely notice their departure. \nPerformances are scheduled for Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm\, with Sunday matinees at 2 pm.
