SUMMARY:Romney: Brilliant Contrasts in Georgian England at Yale Center for British Art
DESCRIPTION:The Yale Center for British Art\, in collaboration with the Yale University Art Gallery\, presents Romney: Brilliant Contrasts in Georgian England\, a compelling exhibition celebrating the museum’s reopening and showcasing the remarkable work of British portraitist George Romney (1734–1802). \nRenowned in his day for capturing the likenesses of fashionable Londoners\, Romney was considered a leading figure of Georgian portraiture\, rivaled only by contemporaries Thomas Gainsborough and Sir Joshua Reynolds. While his ambitions as a history painter were never fully realized\, Romney’s expressive drawings and mastery of form\, line\, and light speak volumes about his creative depth and vision. \nThe exhibition explores Romney’s dual talents through a diverse presentation of portraits\, preparatory sketches\, and musical instruments from the Morris Steinert Collection of Musical Instruments—reflecting his lesser-known interests in music and craftsmanship. Together\, these works shed light on Romney’s artistic legacy and the cultural contrasts of eighteenth-century England\, resonating with admirers from William Blake to contemporary artist Kehinde Wiley. \nRomney: Brilliant Contrasts in Georgian England is on view from Friday\, March 28 through Sunday\, October 19\, 2025\, at the Yale Center for British Art\, 1080 Chapel Street\, New Haven\, Connecticut. \nAdmission is free. For more information\, visit britishart.yale.edu.

SUMMARY:William Blake: Burning Bright at Yale Center for British Art
DESCRIPTION:The Yale Center for British Art will present William Blake: Burning Bright\, an exhibition exploring the visionary art and poetry of William Blake (1757–1827). Known for his radical perspectives on religion\, politics\, and society during the era of the American and French Revolutions\, Blake created highly original illuminated books\, watercolors\, paintings\, and verse. The exhibition highlights the museum’s exceptional holdings\, including celebrated works such as Songs of Innocence and of Experience (1789–94) and The First Book of Urizen (1794). Visitors will also see rare and unique pieces\, including the only fully hand-colored version of Blake’s epic poem Jerusalem (1804–20) and the one-of-a-kind illustrations for The Poems of Thomas Gray (1797–98). \nThe display offers insight into Blake’s innovative printing techniques\, particularly his method for uniting text and image on a single copper plate\, as well as his mastery of engraving and watercolor. Although largely unrecognized during his lifetime\, Blake’s powerful imagery and poetic vision now stand among the most celebrated achievements in British art and literature. \nWilliam Blake: Burning Bright will be on view from Tuesday\, August 26\, 2025\, through Sunday\, November 30\, 2025\, in the third-floor galleries at the Yale Center for British Art\, 1080 Chapel Street\, New Haven\, Connecticut. Admission is free.

SUMMARY:Gallery Talk: Joe Fig – Contemplating Vermeer at New Britain Museum of American Art
DESCRIPTION:Artist Joe Fig offers a special Gallery Talk exploring his current exhibition Contemplating Vermeer at the New Britain Museum of American Art. Inspired by the 2023 Rijksmuseum exhibition that gathered 28 of Johannes Vermeer’s known masterpieces\, Fig’s series reflects on the timeless allure of the Dutch master’s work and the modern-day experience of viewing it. \nIn this exhibition\, Fig builds on his decade-long Contemplation series\, capturing museum visitors as they interact with Vermeer’s paintings\, thoughtfully examining how people engage with art in public spaces. His new paintings pay tribute to Vermeer’s exquisite use of light\, color\, and detail while revealing the quiet moments of reflection that unfold in the gallery. \nJoe Fig’s work is held in major museum collections\, including the Fogg Art Museum\, Chazen Museum of Art\, Norton Museum of Art\, and The New Museum of Contemporary Art. He is also the author of the well-known books Inside the Painter’s Studio and Inside the Artist’s Studio and currently serves as the Department Chair of Fine Arts and Visual Studies at Ringling College of Art and Design. \nGallery Talks will take place on Wednesday\, July 16; September 11; October 9; and November 13\, 2025\, each beginning at 1:00 pm. \nThe New Britain Museum of American Art is located at 56 Lexington Street\, New Britain\, CT. For more details\, visit nbmaa.org or call 860-229-0257. Museum admission applies.

SUMMARY:Artists in Conversation: Hew Locke at Yale Center for British Art
DESCRIPTION:The Yale Center for British Art presents Artists in Conversation: Hew Locke in celebration of the opening of Hew Locke: Passages. This exhibition spans the artist’s career from the late 1990s to today\, showcasing the breadth of his practice. Locke will be in conversation with Martina Droth\, Paul Mellon Director of YCBA and curator of the exhibition\, offering insights into his creative process and themes. \nFor more than thirty years\, Hew Locke has explored the visual codes of imperialism through strategies of appropriation and reinterpretation. His work blends media such as drawing\, photography\, sculpture\, and found objects\, often described as a “postcolonial baroque.” Deeply influenced by both his British and Guyanese heritage\, Locke’s art engages with topics such as colonialism\, migration\, global capitalism\, and diaspora. His recurring motifs include boats\, architecture\, portraiture\, and public statuary\, expressed through richly layered and textured materials. \nBorn in Edinburgh in 1959\, Locke moved to Guyana during the country’s independence movement and later returned to the UK in 1980. He has since become a major figure in contemporary art\, creating works that challenge and reimagine entrenched symbols of power and sovereignty. \nThe event takes place on Thursday\, October 9\, 2025\, from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm at the Yale Center for British Art\, 1080 Chapel Street\, New Haven\, CT 06510.
