SUMMARY:Lighthouse Adventure Cruises to Greens Ledge Light and Sheffield Island Lighthouse
DESCRIPTION:The Norwalk Seaport Association and the Greens Ledge Light Preservation Society will offer special five-hour lighthouse adventure cruises on June 6\, July 11\, and August 8\, inviting guests to explore two of New England’s most historic maritime landmarks in a single excursion. \nDeparting at 8:30 am from the Norwalk Seaport Association dock at 90 Water Street in Norwalk and returning at approximately 1:30 pm\, the guided cruise combines history\, architecture\, storytelling\, and coastal scenery along Long Island Sound. \nThe excursion begins with a cruise through Norwalk Harbor to Greens Ledge Lighthouse\, one of only 33 surviving “Spark Plug” style lighthouses in the United States. Built in 1902 and recently restored\, the lighthouse now welcomes visitors to explore areas including the Beacon Room\, the Trombos Research Center\, and the historic Maclean Watch Room. Guests can also enjoy panoramic harbor views from the outdoor deck while learning about the lighthouse’s colorful history\, including stories of pirates and buried treasure connected to the region. \nThe journey continues to Sheffield Island Lighthouse\, a Victorian-era landmark built in 1868 and listed as a National Historic Site. Visitors can tour restored lighthouse rooms that reflect 19th-century lighthouse life\, climb the tower for views stretching toward the Manhattan skyline\, and relax with a picnic in the island’s shaded seaside pavilion. The island’s history includes tales of smugglers\, pirates\, and bootleggers that add to the immersive maritime experience. \nThe cruises are designed for visitors of all ages and offer a unique opportunity to experience Connecticut’s coastal history and scenic beauty from the water. \nAdditional summer programming from the Norwalk Seaport Association includes daily and weekend cruises to Sheffield Island\, sunset cruises through Norwalk Harbor\, Tuesday clambakes in July and August\, and Pirates Day festivities on July 18 and 19. \nFor tickets and additional information\, visit seaport.org.

SUMMARY:Take me\, take me\, take me . . . to the Palace of Love at Yale Center for British Art
DESCRIPTION:Rina Banerjee’s suspended installation reimagines the iconic form of the Taj Mahal through contemporary materials and perspective. Rather than marble and permanence\, Banerjee constructs her palace from a steel and copper frame wrapped in translucent pink cellophane\, challenging assumptions about luxury\, history\, and cultural legacy. Floating above the ground\, the tentlike structure encloses objects that reference colonial histories\, including an antique Anglo-Indian Bombay chair and a chandelier assembled from foam\, plastic beads\, synthetic elements\, and artificial birds. The work reflects Banerjee’s distinctive practice of combining found objects with consumer materials gathered from markets near her New York home. \nBanerjee\, who received her MFA from the Yale School of Art in 1995\, sees this work return to New Haven for its first display at the museum since its acquisition in 2023. The installation is on view from February 7 through July 26\, 2026\, at the Yale Center for British Art\, 1080 Chapel Street\, New Haven\, CT. The museum is open Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm and Sunday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. Admission is free.

SUMMARY:James Welling: Cento at Fairfield University Art Museum
DESCRIPTION:Fairfield University Art Museum will present James Welling: Cento from September 25 through December 12\, 2026\, in the Walsh Gallery at the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts. The exhibition marks the first American museum presentation of this major body of work by renowned contemporary photographer James Welling. \nFeaturing more than 60 photographs focused on the architecture and sculpture of ancient Greece and Rome\, the exhibition explores the intersection of photography\, painting\, printmaking\, and classical art. Welling’s process combines laser-printed photographs on plastic sheets with hand-applied oil paint\, oil sticks\, and powdered pigments\, creating layered works that challenge traditional ideas of photography and visual representation. \nThe title Cento references a form of ancient “found” poetry created through assembled fragments from existing works. Created between 2019 and 2021\, Welling’s photographs combine segments of ancient statuary and architecture with vivid color overlays that invite viewers to consider the lost polychromy of classical sculpture alongside modern reinterpretations of the ancient world. \nThe exhibition also includes works from Welling’s Personae series\, which reimagines ancient portrait busts by incorporating eyes taken from Old Master paintings. Through this process\, the artist seeks to symbolically “reanimate” figures from antiquity for contemporary audiences. \nIn addition to Welling’s photographs\, the exhibition will feature 10 historic plaster casts selected from Fairfield University Art Museum’s collection of more than 100 casts to complement the themes of transformation and reinterpretation found throughout the exhibition. \nJames Welling\, a Connecticut-born artist associated with the influential “Picture Generation\,” has exhibited internationally and is represented by David Zwirner Gallery. His work is included in major museum collections around the world. \nThe exhibition will be accompanied by a series of free public programs including an opening night lecture with the artist on September 24 at 5:30 pm\, followed by a reception at 6:30 pm. Additional programming includes family art activities\, a symposium on archaeological visual practices\, lectures\, and a December 3 anatomical drawing workshop inspired by the exhibition and the Museum’s plaster cast collection. \nFairfield University Art Museum is located at 1073 North Benson Road\, Fairfield\, CT 06824. All exhibition programs are free and open to the public\, though some events require advance registration due to limited capacity. \nFor more information and a complete schedule of events\, visit the Fairfield University Art Museum website.
