SUMMARY:Romney: Brilliant Contrasts in Georgian England at Yale Center for British Art
DESCRIPTION:The Yale Center for British Art\, in collaboration with the Yale University Art Gallery\, presents Romney: Brilliant Contrasts in Georgian England\, a compelling exhibition celebrating the museum’s reopening and showcasing the remarkable work of British portraitist George Romney (1734–1802). \nRenowned in his day for capturing the likenesses of fashionable Londoners\, Romney was considered a leading figure of Georgian portraiture\, rivaled only by contemporaries Thomas Gainsborough and Sir Joshua Reynolds. While his ambitions as a history painter were never fully realized\, Romney’s expressive drawings and mastery of form\, line\, and light speak volumes about his creative depth and vision. \nThe exhibition explores Romney’s dual talents through a diverse presentation of portraits\, preparatory sketches\, and musical instruments from the Morris Steinert Collection of Musical Instruments—reflecting his lesser-known interests in music and craftsmanship. Together\, these works shed light on Romney’s artistic legacy and the cultural contrasts of eighteenth-century England\, resonating with admirers from William Blake to contemporary artist Kehinde Wiley. \nRomney: Brilliant Contrasts in Georgian England is on view from Friday\, March 28 through Sunday\, October 19\, 2025\, at the Yale Center for British Art\, 1080 Chapel Street\, New Haven\, Connecticut. \nAdmission is free. For more information\, visit britishart.yale.edu.

SUMMARY:Artists and Writers Summer Reading: The Great Gatsby as a Work of Art at New Britain Museum of American Art
DESCRIPTION:In honor of the one hundredth anniversary of the publication of The Great Gatsby\, this special two-session summer reading program invites literature and art lovers to explore why F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel is regarded as one of the most beautifully written works of the 20th century. Led by Docent Carol Lacoss\, participants will connect the novel’s themes and imagery with the Luminist and Impressionist paintings in the NBMAA’s permanent collection. \nDuring the first session\, attendees will examine select artworks\, identify parallels between the visual arts and Fitzgerald’s stylistic techniques\, and read and discuss Chapter 1 of the novel\, focusing on themes of hope and beauty. Participants will then read the remaining chapters with guiding questions on style and meaning. \nThe second session features an in-depth discussion of chapters 2 through 9\, exploring how The Great Gatsby continues to inspire readers and artists alike with its enduring vision of the American dream. The group will revisit the paintings to deepen the connection between written and visual imagery. \nProgram dates are Wednesday\, July 16; August 6; and August 13\, 2025\, from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. \nThis program has sold out; no walk-ins will be accepted. For more information\, visit nbmaa.org or call 860-229-0257. The New Britain Museum of American Art is located at 56 Lexington Street\, New Britain\, CT.

SUMMARY:ManyOtters: Using Big Team Science to Study Otter Problem Solving and Memory at Bridgeport Zoo
DESCRIPTION:Bridgeport Zoo will host a special presentation titled ManyOtters: Using Big Team Science to Study Otter Problem Solving and Memory on August 13\, 2025\, at 7:00 pm. The talk will be led by Dr. Deirdre B. Yeater\, Chair and Professor of Psychology at Sacred Heart University. \nThis engaging lecture will highlight the innovative “ManyOtters” research initiative\, a collaborative project bringing together scientists and animal care professionals from multiple zoos and aquariums—including Beardsley Zoo—to study cognition in otters. Using a unified research model\, the team aims to explore problem solving and long-term memory in otters of all species through the use of novel puzzle feeders. \nThe first phase of the project\, referred to as MO1\, focuses on otter memory retention and has broader implications for improving animal welfare practices in zoological settings. Additionally\, the findings are expected to contribute valuable insights to otter conservation efforts worldwide. \nThe presentation takes place at the Bridgeport Zoo\, 1875 Noble Avenue\, Bridgeport\, Connecticut. For more information and registration details\, visit the zoo’s website.
