SUMMARY:The Enduring Legend of The Leatherman at Wilton Historical Society
DESCRIPTION:The mysterious story of The Leatherman\, one of Connecticut’s most enduring legendary figures\, comes to life in a presentation by Connecticut storyteller and podcaster Mike Allen. During the late 1800s\, The Leatherman reportedly traveled a 364-mile circuitous route through Connecticut and New York every 34 days\, following a routine so consistent that residents could anticipate his arrival. \nKnown for wearing a self-made leather suit from head to toe\, sleeping in caves and avoiding conversation\, The Leatherman remains an intriguing historical mystery. Despite his notoriety and the affection of many residents who encountered him\, his identity is still unknown. \nThe presentation will take place at 7 pm on Thursday\, October 15\, at the Wilton Historical Society\, located at 224 Danbury Road in Wilton. Allen\, who has more than 200 episodes of Connecticut history podcasting experience\, will share the story of this unusual figure and his place in Connecticut history. \nAdmission is free for Historical Society members. Non-members pay $10. \nMore information is available at https://wiltonhistorical.org/events/event/enduring-legend-of-the-leatherman/.

SUMMARY:Iconoclasm in Wilton: The Revolutionary-era Statue of King George III at Wilton Historical Society
DESCRIPTION:The dramatic story of a Revolutionary-era statue and its connection to Wilton takes center stage in a presentation by University of Delaware professor Wendy Bellion. The program explores the 1776 destruction of the equestrian statue of King George III in New York and Wilton’s role in what happened to its remains. \nOn July 9\, 1776\, a crowd pulled the statue from its pedestal at Bowling Green in lower Manhattan following a public reading of the Declaration of Independence. While the statue’s head was sent to London\, British soldiers transported the remaining fragments through Wilton to Litchfield\, where they were melted down and recast as ammunition for Continental soldiers. Loyalists in Wilton reportedly took pieces of the statue along the way and concealed them in fields\, swamps and cellars. The presentation also examines how fragments resurfaced in later centuries and how efforts to recreate the lost statue ultimately led to its destruction again. \nBellion is Professor of Art History and Sewell C. Biggs Chair in American Art at the University of Delaware. Her scholarship focuses on the art and material culture of the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Atlantic World and the early modern Americas. \nThe presentation will take place from 7 pm to 8 pm on Wednesday\, October 14\, at the Wilton Historical Society. Admission is free for Historical Society members\, while non-members pay $10. \nMore information is available at https://wiltonhistorical.org/events/event/iconoclasm-in-wilton-the-revolutionary-era-statue-of-king-george-iii/.

SUMMARY:The New England Vampire Folk Belief: The Archaeological Record
DESCRIPTION:The archaeological evidence behind New England’s historic vampire folklore will be explored in a virtual presentation by Dr. Nicholas F. Bellantoni\, Connecticut state archaeologist emeritus. The program examines cases from the late 18th and 19th centuries when corpses were exhumed and altered in attempts to stop the spread of consumption\, the historical term for pulmonary tuberculosis. \nBellantoni will discuss a significant archaeological discovery from an eastern Connecticut family burial ground\, where researchers uncovered the rearranged skeletal remains of an adult male showing evidence of tuberculosis infection. The presentation draws on archaeological excavations\, American literature\, folklore and forensic research to explore how these findings help explain vampire-related folk beliefs in Connecticut. \nDr. Bellantoni is a former Connecticut state archaeologist and associate research professor in anthropology at the University of Connecticut. His research includes forensic archaeology and faunal analysis in eastern North America. His latest book\, Vampires and Gallstones: Bioarchaeology and Forensic Science of Connecticut’s Historic Burial Grounds\, is scheduled for publication in November 2026. \nThe talk will be held virtually at 7 pm on Thursday\, October 8. Admission is free for Wilton Historical Society members and $10 for non-members. \nFor more information\, contact the Wilton Historical Society at 203-762-7257.
