DESCRIPTION:Garden enthusiasts can explore four private gardens in Weston during the Garden Conservancy’s Open Days program on Saturday\, September 19\, from 10 am to 4 pm. This one-day-only opportunity offers a closer look at the horticultural creativity\, personality\, and dedication behind a selection of Fairfield County gardens. \nFrances Palmer’s Garden features a cutting garden\, tennis court garden\, 15 raised beds\, four beehives\, and more than 100 varieties of dahlias in an array of shapes and sizes. Nomadica is an evolving landscape focused on beauty\, biodiversity\, and experimentation\, with cut flowers\, unusual vegetables\, fruits\, gourds\, perennial plantings\, native plants\, and a stream. \nProspect Gardens is a nine-acre historic arboretum with winding pathways\, grass borders\, flowering shrubs\, berry houses\, beehives\, and a shaded woodland walk. TideBrook Garden\, located in the Riverside Westport residential area\, occupies 0.2 acres and features ornamental flowers and shrubs\, an umbrella canopy\, and distinctive artwork and earthwork berms and trenches shaped into banks and islands. \nTickets are $10 per person\, or $5 for Garden Conservancy members. Children age 12 and under are admitted free when accompanied by a parent or guardian. Registration is required and must be completed online through the Garden Conservancy. Pets are not permitted. SUMMARY:Loyalty and Zeal: Algonkians of the Revolution at Weston History & Culture Center
DESCRIPTION:The Weston History & Culture Center will explore the contributions and experiences of Algonkian peoples during the American Revolution with Loyalty and Zeal: Algonkians of the Revolution on Sunday\, October 4\, from 2 pm to 4 pm. Guests can stop by anytime during the program for a demonstration and discussion led by Drew Shuptar-Rayvis\, a citizen of the Pocomoke Indian Nation. \nThe program will examine the material culture and trade of Algonkian peoples during the Revolution\, as well as the complex political choices surrounding patriotism\, toryism\, and neutrality. Shuptar-Rayvis will bring artifacts and reproduction pieces and wear traditional clothing while discussing the contributions\, struggles\, and sacrifices of Algonkian peoples during the War of American Independence. Guests will also have an opportunity to ask questions. \nThe free event will be held outdoors\, weather permitting\, with the program moving indoors in the event of rain. Registration is encouraged. It is part of the “America 250: The Revolutionary Spirit Lecture Series\,” co-sponsored by the Friends of the Weston Public Library\, the Weston History & Culture Center\, and the League of Women Voters of Weston\, with support from the Weston America 250 Advisory Group. \nThe Weston History & Culture Center is located at 104 Weston Road\, Weston\, CT 06883.
