SUMMARY:Adult Learning Showcase at Presidents’ College
DESCRIPTION:Presidents’ College Lifelong Learning at the University of Hartford will kick off its fall season with Adult Learning Showcase: Dive into Something New on Wednesday\, September 16\, from 4:30 to 6 pm. The event will take place at Presidents’ College on the University of Hartford campus at 200 Bloomfield Avenue\, West Hartford. \nThe Fall Kickoff offers an informal introduction to Presidents’ College’s adult learning programs\, beginning with 30 minutes of wine and refreshments followed by an hour of short\, lively mini-interviews hosted by Director Michele Troy with several fall instructors. The showcase provides an opportunity to discover the range of classes and meet some of the professors and community thought leaders who will lead upcoming programs. \nFall offerings cover topics including Iranian history and culture\, the science of clouds\, cold case investigations and forensic science\, the Supreme Court\, immunology\, Bach\, world myths\, Jane Eyre\, French film\, national and global politics\, and the history of the Connecticut Wangunk tribe. A special theater experience will also pair discussions with a performance of Hartford Stage’s Dracula. \nPresidents’ College offers lectures\, discussions\, two- and three-session mini-courses\, and immersive learning experiences designed to fit busy schedules. There are no tests or homework\, and there is no membership fee; participants pay only for the individual programs they choose. \nThe Adult Learning Showcase will be held at 200 Bloomfield Avenue\, West Hartford\, CT. SUMMARY:Fall for Park at Park Road
DESCRIPTION:Fall for Park is a free community fall festival celebrating the businesses\, residents\, and character of West Hartford’s Park Road neighborhood. The event takes place Saturday\, October 3\, from 10 am to 4 pm and builds on the tradition of the former Park Road Parade with family-friendly activities\, special promotions\, live entertainment\, and an antique trolley connecting visitors with participating businesses. \nThe event will take place without a street closure. Visitors can park once and use the trolley\, which will have designated stops along Park Road. A program of activities will be available at trolley stops and participating businesses\, with more than 16 businesses currently signed up. \nParticipating businesses include A Strand Ahead\, AC Peterson Farms\, Black Diamond Body Piercing\, Ceara Market\, Charming Nails & Spa\, Effie’s Family Restaurant\, The Eight Gates Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine\, Halls Market\, Health is Wealth Juice Bar\, J Renee Coffee Roasters\, Joey’s Pizza Pie\, Lucky Tattoo\, Playhouse on Park\, Portobello Restaurant\, River Bend Bookshop\, Salt + Lime Mexican Cantina\, Smoke Public House\, Spits Mediterranean Street Food\, West Hartford Second Chance Shop\, The White Rabbit\, and others. DESCRIPTION:Playhouse on Park will host a special post-performance talkback in partnership with Voices of Hope on Sunday\, October 11\, following the 2 pm performance of The Happiest Man on Earth. The talkback will begin at approximately 3:30 pm and will feature Voices of Hope representatives Gayle Weiner Temkin and Stu Abrams. \nTemkin\, the incoming president of Voices of Hope\, is a longtime community leader and the daughter of Holocaust survivor Abby Weiner\, who\, like Eddie Jaku\, was imprisoned at Auschwitz. Abrams is a Voices of Hope board member and an Avon High School teacher who has taught courses on genocide\, human behavior\, and human rights since 1994. \nThe Happiest Man on Earth tells the story of Eddie Jaku\, a German-Jewish survivor of Auschwitz who dedicated his life to sharing his experiences and encouraging others to find hope and light despite the darkness of the Holocaust. \nGuests can attend the 2 pm performance and stay for the talkback\, or attend the talkback after the performance.
