SUMMARY:Hew Locke: Passages at Yale Center for British Art
DESCRIPTION:The Yale Center for British Art presents Hew Locke: Passages\, an exhibition tracing more than three decades of work by Guyanese-British artist Hew Locke. Known for his layered\, richly textured approach described as a “postcolonial baroque\,” Locke employs sculpture\, photography\, drawing\, and found objects to challenge and reimagine the visual codes of imperialism. \nOn view from Thursday\, October 2\, 2025\, through Sunday\, January 11\, 2026\, in the second-floor galleries\, the exhibition spans Locke’s career from the late 1990s to today. It highlights recurring themes such as portraiture\, public statuary\, ships\, boats\, and architecture\, while exploring the lasting effects of colonialism and the legacies of global capitalism\, migration\, and diaspora. \nLocke\, born in Edinburgh in 1959 and raised in Guyana before returning to Britain in 1980\, draws from both his British and Guyanese heritage to create works that fuse vernacular and formal traditions. His practice reflects a dynamic engagement with history and contemporary society through innovative use of material and form. \nAdmission to the exhibition is free. The Yale Center for British Art is located at 1080 Chapel Street\, New Haven\, CT 06510.

SUMMARY:William Blake: Burning Bright at Yale Center for British Art
DESCRIPTION:The Yale Center for British Art will present William Blake: Burning Bright\, an exhibition exploring the visionary art and poetry of William Blake (1757–1827). Known for his radical perspectives on religion\, politics\, and society during the era of the American and French Revolutions\, Blake created highly original illuminated books\, watercolors\, paintings\, and verse. The exhibition highlights the museum’s exceptional holdings\, including celebrated works such as Songs of Innocence and of Experience (1789–94) and The First Book of Urizen (1794). Visitors will also see rare and unique pieces\, including the only fully hand-colored version of Blake’s epic poem Jerusalem (1804–20) and the one-of-a-kind illustrations for The Poems of Thomas Gray (1797–98). \nThe display offers insight into Blake’s innovative printing techniques\, particularly his method for uniting text and image on a single copper plate\, as well as his mastery of engraving and watercolor. Although largely unrecognized during his lifetime\, Blake’s powerful imagery and poetic vision now stand among the most celebrated achievements in British art and literature. \nWilliam Blake: Burning Bright will be on view from Tuesday\, August 26\, 2025\, through Sunday\, November 30\, 2025\, in the third-floor galleries at the Yale Center for British Art\, 1080 Chapel Street\, New Haven\, Connecticut. SUMMARY:Mickalene Thomas’s Liz with Hoops at Yale University Art Gallery
DESCRIPTION:The Yale University Art Gallery presents a discussion on Mickalene Thomas’s Liz with Hoops (2023)\, led by Keely Orgeman\, the Seymour H. Knox\, Jr.\, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art. This recently acquired painting marks the first work by Mickalene Thomas\, M.F.A. 2002\, to enter the Gallery’s collection. The piece features a striking portrait of Liz\, a professional model\, posed against a dynamic background of faux-wood paneling\, plants\, and abstract patterns. Adorned with sparkling rhinestones\, Liz with Hoops evokes the layered spirit of collage and is based on an earlier work Thomas created from her own 2013 photograph. \nThe talk will explore Thomas’s decade-long creative process and the ways in which the portrait connects to themes of Black identity and domestic space highlighted in the Gallery’s 2023–24 exhibition Mickalene Thomas / Portrait of an Unlikely Space. The program takes place on Wednesday\, November 19\, 2025\, from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm at the Yale University Art Gallery\, located at 1111 Chapel Street\, New Haven\, Connecticut. Admission is free and open to the public.

Admission is free.
