DESCRIPTION:Fairfield University will dedicate She Wouldn’t Take Off Her Boots\, a bronze Holocaust memorial sculpture by artist Victoria Milstein\, on Thursday\, September 10. The sculpture honors five Jewish women who were murdered during the Holocaust and commemorates an extraordinary act of defiance in the face of certain death. \nThe sculpture depicts the five women alongside a bronze camera facing them\, symbolizing the Nazi photographer’s lens through which their final moments were documented. The memorial tells the story of Frume Purve\, who refused to remove her boots before her execution\, along with Sorella Epstein\, Roza Epstein\, Mia-Malka Epstein\, and Emma Epstein. Their courage and dignity have become a lasting symbol of resistance and the enduring strength of the human spirit. \nThe memorial is the second U.S. installation of Milstein’s work and is located between the Charles F. Dolan School of Business and Bellarmine Pond on the Fairfield University campus. The first installation was unveiled in Greensboro\, North Carolina\, in 2023. Fairfield’s sculpture was donated by Shoah Memorial Fairfield\, Connecticut\, which was established by Fairfield native Paul Burger after he encountered the original memorial. An accompanying endowment will support the sculpture’s maintenance and care in perpetuity. \nAn invitation-only dedication ceremony will take place from 5 to 5:30 pm on September 10\, with speakers including Fairfield University President Mark R. Nemec\, PhD\, Ambassador Deborah Lipstadt\, Paul Burger\, and Victoria Milstein. The ceremony will be followed by a ticketed lecture by Ambassador Lipstadt at 7:30 pm at the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts. The lecture\, “Art\, Memory\, History: The Holocaust and Its Lessons for Our Moment\,” is part of the Philip I. Eliasoph Open VISIONS Forum. \nThe sculpture itself is available for visitors to experience from dawn to dusk. It is located on the Fairfield University campus at 1073 North Benson Road\, Fairfield\, CT 06824\, with parking available at the Dolan School of Business and the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts. Quick Center for the Arts. \nLipstadt is a historian\, academic\, and author who served as the U.S. special envoy to monitor and combat antisemitism from 2022 to 2025\, holding the rank of ambassador. During her time at the U.S. Department of State\, she led efforts to advance U.S. foreign policy addressing antisemitism around the world. \nBefore joining the State Department\, Lipstadt served as the Dorot Professor of Modern Jewish History and Holocaust Studies at Emory University’s Tam Institute for Jewish Studies\, which she helped found. She has taught at Emory for 30 years and currently holds the position of Distinguished University Professor. Her work is grounded in combating hate\, pursuing justice\, and challenging efforts to distort history for ideological purposes. \nThe presentation will take place at the Regina A. The exhibition explores the lasting influence of ancient Egyptian art and culture on modern imagination\, design\, and popular culture through paintings\, prints\, photography\, sculpture\, decorative arts\, and contemporary works spanning the early 19th century to today. \nCurated by Museum Registrar Megan Paqua\, the exhibition examines the phenomenon known as “Egyptomania\,” tracing how ancient Egyptian imagery has been interpreted\, misunderstood\, commercialized\, and reimagined across generations. The exhibition includes works ranging from 19th-century paintings and decorative objects to contemporary art addressing identity\, race\, colonialism\, and cultural memory. \nFeatured artists and objects include David Roberts’ 1849 painting The Hypostyle Hall of the Great Temple of Abu Simbel\, Egypt\, Audrey Flack’s Lux Eternal\, and works by Lorraine O’Grady\, Esmeralda Kosmatopoulos\, Sara Sallam\, Jane Hammond\, and Fred Wilson. The exhibition also explores popular themes including Cleopatra\, mummies\, King Tut\, and the influence of ancient Egypt in film\, fashion\, media\, and visual culture. \nLenders to the exhibition include the Yale Center for British Art\, Yale University Art Gallery\, the Wadsworth Atheneum\, the Hood Museum of Art\, artists\, and private collectors. Siegel is an expert on Nazi medicine and the history of Jewish physicians during the Holocaust. She is a visiting scholar at the Dornsife Center for Advanced Genocide Research at the University of Southern California Los Angeles. \nSiegel earned her PhD in history from the University of Southern California and has held postdoctoral fellowships at the Yale Fortunoff Video Archive and the Cedars-Sinai Program in the History of Medicine. DESCRIPTION:Fairfield University Art Museum will present James Welling: Cento from September 25 through December 12\, 2026\, in the Walsh Gallery at the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts. The exhibition marks the first American museum presentation of this major body of work by renowned contemporary photographer James Welling. \nFeaturing more than 60 photographs focused on the architecture and sculpture of ancient Greece and Rome\, the exhibition explores the intersection of photography\, painting\, printmaking\, and classical art. Welling’s process combines laser-printed photographs on plastic sheets with hand-applied oil paint\, oil sticks\, and powdered pigments\, creating layered works that challenge traditional ideas of photography and visual representation. \nThe title Cento references a form of ancient “found” poetry created through assembled fragments from existing works. Created between 2019 and 2021\, Welling’s photographs combine segments of ancient statuary and architecture with vivid color overlays that invite viewers to consider the lost polychromy of classical sculpture alongside modern reinterpretations of the ancient world. \nThe exhibition also includes works from Welling’s Personae series\, which reimagines ancient portrait busts by incorporating eyes taken from Old Master paintings. Through this process\, the artist seeks to symbolically “reanimate” figures from antiquity for contemporary audiences. \nIn addition to Welling’s photographs\, the exhibition will feature 10 historic plaster casts selected from Fairfield University Art Museum’s collection of more than 100 casts to complement the themes of transformation and reinterpretation found throughout the exhibition. \nJames Welling\, a Connecticut-born artist associated with the influential “Picture Generation\,” has exhibited internationally and is represented by David Zwirner Gallery. His work is included in major museum collections around the world. \nThe exhibition will be accompanied by a series of free public programs including an opening night lecture with the artist on September 24 at 5:30 pm\, followed by a reception at 6:30 pm. SUMMARY:Bank of America Capalbo Strong Walk at Jennings Beach
DESCRIPTION:The Bank of America Capalbo Strong Walk returns to Fairfield on Sunday\, October 4\, honoring the legacy of Charlie Capalbo and bringing the community together to support pediatric cancer research and families facing similar challenges. \nRegistration begins at 7 am\, with the 24K walk starting at 8 am from Jennings Beach. The 15-mile course loops through nearby Fairfield\, allowing participants to complete one 5-mile lap\, two laps\, or the full distance. The course keeps walkers close to the beach\, making it possible to stop whenever needed. \nParticipants are asked to pay the registration fee and raise a minimum of $300. Virtual participants are asked to pay the registration fee and raise a minimum of $100. \nFounded in 2017 by Fairfield Prep hockey moms during Charlie’s first battle with cancer\, Capalbo Strong was created to support Charlie and his family. Charlie faced Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and Leukemia and courageously beat cancer three times before passing away in April 2022\, just one month shy of his 24th birthday. The walk continues his legacy by raising funds for pediatric cancer efforts\, including the Charlie Capalbo Memorial Fund at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute\, as well as future grants to local hospitals\, programs\, and organizations that support families facing childhood cancer. \nThe Bank of America Capalbo Strong Walk takes place at Jennings Beach in Fairfield\, CT.
