SUMMARY:Woodland Academy: Forest Management for Wildlife at Great Mountain Forest
DESCRIPTION:Landowners\, forest managers\, conservation organizations\, and municipal leaders can learn how forestry practices support healthy wildlife populations during Woodland Academy: Forest Management for Wildlife on August 27 from 9 am to 4 pm at Great Mountain Forest. \nThis full-day course examines the relationship between forest management and wildlife habitat\, exploring how forest age\, structure\, and composition influence the species that live within a woodland ecosystem. Participants will learn how practices such as thinning\, regeneration cuts\, and habitat diversification can be used to support songbirds\, mammals\, pollinators\, and other wildlife while meeting broader land management goals. \nThe program combines classroom instruction with field visits\, allowing attendees to observe real-world examples of wildlife-focused forest management. Experts from Connecticut DEEP\, the Sharon Audubon Center\, and Great Mountain Forest will share practical strategies for balancing conservation objectives with long-term forest stewardship. \nInstructors include wildlife biologist Peter Picone of Connecticut DEEP\, Eileen Fielding\, Center Director of the Sharon Audubon Center\, and Great Mountain Forest forester Kate Regan-Loomis. \nThe course has been approved for two Connecticut Forest Practitioner continuing education credits. Participants should be comfortable spending significant time outdoors\, walking off-trail over uneven terrain\, and standing for extended periods in varying weather conditions. \nCoffee\, tea\, water\, and snacks will be provided. Participants should bring their own lunch. \nThe workshop will take place at the historic Yale Camp within Great Mountain Forest\, accessed via the forest’s West Gate on Chattleton Road off Canaan Mountain Road in Falls Village\, CT. Detailed directions will be provided after registration. \nRegistration is $25 per person. \nFor registration and additional information\, visit https://greatmountainforest.org/forest-management-for-wildlife/.

SUMMARY:Sarah Treadwell: Connecticut Mom\, American Patriot at Weston History & Culture Center
DESCRIPTION:A new exhibition exploring the life and legacy of a Revolutionary War-era Connecticut woman will be on view from May 9 through December 17\, 2026 at the Weston History & Culture Center\, 104 Weston Road\, Weston\, CT 06883. Parking and entrance are accessible from High Acre Road through the Visitor’s Center. \nSarah Treadwell: Connecticut Mom\, American Patriot highlights the story of Sarah Treadwell and the important yet often overlooked role women played during the American Revolution. Through personal history and historical context\, the exhibit explores Sarah’s resilience as a wife\, mother\, and community member while her family took an active role in the fight for independence. \nVisitors will learn about daily life during and after the Revolutionary War\, the experiences of veterans and widows navigating the pension process\, and the challenges faced by families living in the North Fairfield area\, which later became Weston and Easton. The exhibit also sheds light on the broader contributions women made to sustaining homes and communities during America’s founding years. \nCurated by Mark Brennan with research assistance from the Historical Society of Easton\, the exhibition is funded in part by a grant from Connecticut Humanities in recognition of America’s 250th anniversary. \nThe exhibit is open during public hours every Thursday from 1 pm to 4 pm and on the first and last Sunday of each month from 1 pm to 4 pm. The museum is closed on holidays and holiday weekends. \nFor more information\, visit westoncthistory.org.
