SUMMARY:Hew Locke: Passages at Yale Center for British Art
DESCRIPTION:The Yale Center for British Art presents Hew Locke: Passages\, an exhibition tracing more than three decades of work by Guyanese-British artist Hew Locke. Known for his layered\, richly textured approach described as a “postcolonial baroque\,” Locke employs sculpture\, photography\, drawing\, and found objects to challenge and reimagine the visual codes of imperialism. \nOn view from Thursday\, October 2\, 2025\, through Sunday\, January 11\, 2026\, in the second-floor galleries\, the exhibition spans Locke’s career from the late 1990s to today. It highlights recurring themes such as portraiture\, public statuary\, ships\, boats\, and architecture\, while exploring the lasting effects of colonialism and the legacies of global capitalism\, migration\, and diaspora. \nLocke\, born in Edinburgh in 1959 and raised in Guyana before returning to Britain in 1980\, draws from both his British and Guyanese heritage to create works that fuse vernacular and formal traditions. His practice reflects a dynamic engagement with history and contemporary society through innovative use of material and form. \nAdmission to the exhibition is free. The Yale Center for British Art is located at 1080 Chapel Street\, New Haven\, CT 06510.

SUMMARY:William Blake: Burning Bright at Yale Center for British Art
DESCRIPTION:The Yale Center for British Art will present William Blake: Burning Bright\, an exhibition exploring the visionary art and poetry of William Blake (1757–1827). Known for his radical perspectives on religion\, politics\, and society during the era of the American and French Revolutions\, Blake created highly original illuminated books\, watercolors\, paintings\, and verse. The exhibition highlights the museum’s exceptional holdings\, including celebrated works such as Songs of Innocence and of Experience (1789–94) and The First Book of Urizen (1794). Visitors will also see rare and unique pieces\, including the only fully hand-colored version of Blake’s epic poem Jerusalem (1804–20) and the one-of-a-kind illustrations for The Poems of Thomas Gray (1797–98). \nThe display offers insight into Blake’s innovative printing techniques\, particularly his method for uniting text and image on a single copper plate\, as well as his mastery of engraving and watercolor. Although largely unrecognized during his lifetime\, Blake’s powerful imagery and poetic vision now stand among the most celebrated achievements in British art and literature. \nWilliam Blake: Burning Bright will be on view from Tuesday\, August 26\, 2025\, through Sunday\, November 30\, 2025\, in the third-floor galleries at the Yale Center for British Art\, 1080 Chapel Street\, New Haven\, Connecticut. Admission is free.

SUMMARY:Doug Stanhope at Hartford Funny Bone Comedy Club
DESCRIPTION:Doug Stanhope brings his fiercely unfiltered and confrontational comedy to Hartford for a midday show filled with sharp social commentary and dark\, fearless humor. Twice named “Best Stand-Up Show” by Time Out New York\, Stanhope is known for his no-holds-barred approach\, mixing caustic cultural critique with wildly outrageous personal stories. \nDescribed by The Guardian as “a visionary douchebag” with “aggressive intelligence” and dubbed “Charles Bukowski with dick jokes” by The San Antonio Current\, Stanhope thrives on complete creative freedom. Free from censors or sponsors\, he performs with raw honesty and an edge that has earned him a devoted cult following. His fans are fiercely loyal\, drawn to his brutally honest take on the decline of Western civilization and his unapologetic\, booze-fueled storytelling. \nStanhope began his comedy career in 1990 while working a telemarketing job and found his voice in the mid-’90s\, transforming from a “dick-joke guy with a mullet” into a razor-sharp social critic. He’s performed at the Just for Laughs Festival\, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe—where he won the Strathmore Press Award—and appeared on The Howard Stern Show\, Comedy Central Presents\, and Louie\, where his portrayal of a suicidal comic was widely acclaimed. \nFans can expect an unapologetic\, thought-provoking\, and often riotously funny experience as Stanhope brings his latest material to the stage. \nThe show takes place on Saturday\, October 25\, 2025\, at Hartford Funny Bone Comedy Club\, 194 Buckland Hills Drive\, Manchester\, Connecticut. Doors open at 11 am\, and the show begins at 12 pm.
