West Indian Independence Celebration
August 10 @ 11:00 am - 8:00 pm
Join the Greater Hartford area in celebrating Caribbean culture at the annual West Indian Independence Celebration, established in 1962 by West Indian immigrants. This vibrant and colorful festival is one of the largest Caribbean cultural celebrations in the U.S. northeast. The festivities begin with a lively carnival parade featuring floats, steel pan music, dance teams, stilt walkers, drill teams, marching bands, and masqueraders in elaborate costumes inspired by Caribbean carnivals.
The parade culminates in Bushnell Park, where a live music concert showcases some of the biggest personalities, entertainers, and bands from the Caribbean. The event also includes a music festival and a variety of food vendors offering delicious West Indian cuisine.
This festival is not only a celebration of West Indian culture, music, and food but also a way to connect West Indians and future generations born in the United States with their rich heritage. The week-long celebration traditionally kicks off in the second week of August, with the grand parade and music festival concluding the festivities on the second Saturday of the month.
Come experience the vibrant energy, culture, and community spirit at the West Indian Independence Celebration in Hartford!
