The Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury presents The Art of Elizabeth Catlett: From the Collection of Samella Lewis, on view from April 6 through June 15, 2025. This compelling exhibition features 38 works by Elizabeth Catlett (1915–2012), one of the most influential Black artists of the 20th century. Known for her evocative prints and sculptures, Catlett used her art to highlight social justice and celebrate Black and Mexican identities—what she called “my two peoples.”
The exhibition showcases Catlett’s powerful visual narratives that span over seven decades, capturing her role as an artist, educator, and activist. These works, drawn from the collection of fellow artist and scholar Samella Lewis, highlight Catlett’s impact on political movements and personal lives alike.
This exhibition is organized by Landau Traveling Exhibitions, Los Angeles, and supported by Post University.
The Mattatuck Museum is located at 144 West Main Street, Waterbury, Connecticut. Admission is $15 for adults, $12 for seniors, $10 for college students with ID, and $8 for children ages 5–18.
