Strangers in the Land: Exclusion, Belonging, and the Epic Story of the Chinese in America (Virtual) presented by Mark Twain House Museum

On Thursday, May 22, 2025, at 7:00 pm, the Mark Twain House & Museum presents a virtual event featuring acclaimed writer Michael Luo. In this powerful program, Luo will discuss his new book Strangers in the Land: Exclusion, Belonging, and the Epic Story of the Chinese in America, a sweeping historical account of Chinese immigration, racial violence, and the long fight for belonging in the United States.

Drawing from archival materials, Chinese-language sources, and interviews with descendants, Luo traces the roots of anti-Asian sentiment and its lasting impact on American society and immigration policies. This timely and essential work places Chinese American experiences at the heart of America’s ongoing conversations around race, democracy, and national identity.

This event is part of the museum’s “Truths in Our Time” series, which explores how nonfiction can spark meaningful dialogue about critical social issues, in the spirit of Mark Twain’s legacy.

This virtual event is free to attend, but registration is required. For more information or to reserve your spot, visit marktwainhouse.org.
