Shakuntalam at The Bushnell
May 24 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Experience the timeless beauty of Shakuntalam, a classical Indian play based on Abhigyan Shakuntalam by the legendary Sanskrit poet Kalidasa. Presented by the Rasa Dance Project, this production brings to life the epic love story of Shakuntala and King Dushyanta through a compelling fusion of script, dance, and music.
Set in ancient India, the story follows the tender romance between Shakuntala, raised in a forest hermitage, and King Dushyanta. Their union, followed by a dramatic separation and eventual reunion, unfolds in a tale that has shaped Indian cultural identity—Bharata, their son, is considered the namesake ancestor of India.
This celebrated play has the distinction of being the first Indian drama translated into Western languages, with at least 46 translations in 12 European languages, and continues to captivate audiences with its emotional depth and lyrical beauty.
Concept, script, and choreography are by Rachna Ramya and Aishwarya Chakravarthy, with music composed by Madura R. Muralidharan.
The performance takes place on May 24, 2025, at The Bushnell, 166 Capitol Avenue, Hartford, CT 06106. For tickets and more information, visit thebushnell.org.
