Scientific Illustration of Birds with Virge Kask at the Benton Museum of Art

Explore the beauty of birds through art and observation during Scientific Illustration of Birds with Virge Kask on June 27, 2026, from 2 pm to 4 pm at the William Benton Museum of Art in Storrs. Held in conjunction with the Birds Up Close exhibition, this hands-on workshop offers participants an introduction to the techniques and skills used in scientific illustration.

Designed for beginners, the session focuses on observing bird anatomy, capturing gesture and posture, and accurately rendering features such as feathers and beaks using pencil and tracing paper. Under the guidance of artist and educator Virge Kask, participants will learn methods for conveying the character and form of birds while developing essential drawing and observation skills.

The workshop will also provide tips for drawing from preserved specimens and live subjects, offering insight into the careful balance between artistic expression and scientific accuracy. All supplies are included, making it easy for participants to dive into the creative process.

Registration is required. Admission is $15 for Connecticut State Museum of Natural History and Benton Museum members and $20 for non-members. Advanced registration is necessary, and space may be limited.
