RUSUNUNGUKO (liberty / independence / freedom) at Yale Schwarzman Center

Explore an installation by designer and visual artist Nontsikelelo Mutiti, whose printed works, films, and installations engage with the history and aesthetics of hair braiding in Black life. The title draws on the Shona word “ruka,” meaning to weave, braid, or knit, and reflects the social connections formed in salons, living rooms, and porches where hair is braided. The work is on view in the Dome Gallery from April 11, 2024, through June 25, 2027. Admission is free and open to the public.

The Dome Gallery at Yale Schwarzman Center is located at 168 Grove St., New Haven, CT 06511. Hours are Monday and Tuesday, 8:30 am to 6 pm; Wednesday through Friday, 8:30 am to 11 pm; and Saturday and Sunday, 10 am to 6 pm. Check the center’s website for current hours.
