Lunch and Learn – Living on the Edge in New England, New Netherland, and New Sweden at Connecticut Museum of Culture and History (Virtual)

This virtual Lunch and Learn program offers a closer look at imperial entanglement in seventeenth-century North America. New England Regional Fellowship Consortium grantee Elizabeth Hines will explore how settlers in the Dutch colony of New Netherland and the English colony of Connecticut disputed their borders, ultimately resolving them with the Treaty of Hartford in 1650. The talk examines why the Netherlands chose to officially ratify the treaty six years later and how that decision connected to the annexation of the neighboring Swedish colony of New Sweden. By placing Dutch, English, and Swedish ambitions side by side, the presentation highlights why these empires must be studied together to fully understand early American history.
This free virtual event will take place on December 9, 2025, from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. Registration is required to receive the Zoom link.
