Jumping Through Hoops: Performing Gender in the Nineteenth-Century Circus at The Mark Twain House & Museum

The Mark Twain House & Museum will host an in-person event exploring the untold stories of women and gender-nonconforming performers in the nineteenth-century circus. Part of the Truths in Our Time Series, Jumping Through Hoops examines how daring entertainers of the era challenged societal norms and redefined visibility through performance. Historian and author Betsy Golden Kellem will share insights into the connections between the evolution of the American circus and shifting gender roles, blending rich historical storytelling with cultural analysis.
Following the discussion, books will be available for purchase, and Kellem will sign copies. The event will be moderated by Kathleen Maher, Executive Director of the Barnum Museum.
This program takes place on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, from 7 pm to 8 pm at The Mark Twain House & Museum, 351 Farmington Avenue, Hartford, Connecticut. For ticket reservations and additional details, visit marktwainhouse.org.
