John Constable: The Landscape Reimagined at Yale Center for British Art

Explore the groundbreaking work of British landscape painter John Constable in John Constable: The Landscape Reimagined, a free exhibition at the Yale Center for British Art from September 3, 2026, through July 25, 2027. On view in the museum’s second-floor galleries, the exhibition marks the 250th anniversary of Constable’s birth and offers a rare opportunity to experience the breadth of his artistic achievements.
Known for his innovative outdoor paintings, Constable challenged traditional ideas of landscape art by placing greater emphasis on skies, light, seasons, and atmosphere. The exhibition brings together major works, including cloud studies, plein air sketches, and two of his monumental “six-footers,” among them Hadleigh Castle. Visitors can also see works that have never before been publicly displayed in the United States, including a study of Hampstead Heath recently acquired by the museum.
Engravings and drawings reveal how Constable developed his ideas across different artistic media, while works by contemporaries John Linnell and Richard Parkes Bonington provide insight into the artistic landscape of his time. Together, these pieces illustrate how Constable’s direct observation of nature helped establish landscape painting as a significant artistic pursuit and influenced generations of painters.
