Javanese Gamelan Concert at Yale University Art Gallery

The Yale University Art Gallery presents a Javanese Gamelan Concert on Thursday, November 20, 2025, from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Performed by the Yale University Gamelan Ensemble, this event offers an immersive musical experience inspired by the traditions of Java and Bali in Indonesia.

Featuring bronze gongs, metallophones, drums, wooden percussion, and traditional vocals, the performance highlights the intricate textures and rhythmic layers of Central Javanese music, particularly that of Surakarta and nearby villages. Modeled on a klenèngan—a semiformal community gathering to play gamelan—the concert moves from serene and meditative pieces to joyful, energetic rhythms, reflecting the dynamic spirit of Javanese musical culture.
