The Thames River’s rich military history comes to life during In Our Nation’s Defense, a historical boat tour presented July 25–27, 2025, by the Submarine Force Library Museum in Groton, Connecticut.
This narrated tour highlights the region’s vital role in national defense—from the American Revolution to the rise of modern submarine warfare. Passengers will explore the site of a Revolutionary War battle, learn about Benedict Arnold’s infamous betrayal and the burning of New London, and see firsthand how the area evolved into the “Submarine Capital of the World.” The route also features views of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, the Naval Submarine Base New London, and Electric Boat—where submarines are still built today.
This educational experience departs from the museum, located at 1 Crystal Lake Road, Groton, CT. Specific departure times may vary; visitors are encouraged to check with the museum for daily tour schedules and ticket availability.
