Hollywood Gem: The Old Man and the Sea at Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center

Spencer Tracy stars in the 1958 film adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s classic novella The Old Man and the Sea, screening on May 14, 2025. This moving tale follows an aging Cuban fisherman who, after 84 days without a catch, hooks a massive marlin and embarks on a solitary battle to bring it home. Determined to prove his worth and break his unlucky streak, the old man endures days and nights at sea in a test of endurance, spirit, and resilience.
This Hollywood gem is a poignant exploration of perseverance and dignity in the face of nature’s challenges. Tracy’s powerful performance earned him an Academy Award nomination, and the film won an Oscar for Best Original Score.
