Hogarth: His Art, Life, and Times at Yale Center for British Art

A symposium exploring the art and legacy of renowned English engraver and painter William Hogarth continues Thursday, October 15, from 10:15 am to 6:30 pm in the Lecture Hall at the Yale Center for British Art. The free public event celebrates Professor Ronald Paulson (1930–2024), a leading Hogarth scholar, and recognizes the gift of his papers on the artist, along with a legacy endowment establishing a fellowship at the Lewis Walpole Library in memory of his son, Andrew Meredith Paulson.

Speakers will present new research on Hogarth through multidisciplinary perspectives, with panel themes including “Paulson’s Hogarth,” “Drawing,” “Nation and Empire,” and “Social and Political Critique.” The artist was described by Horace Walpole as “that great and original genius,” reflecting his lasting significance in British art and cultural history.

Organized by the Lewis Walpole Library in collaboration with the Yale Center for British Art, Yale Library, and the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, the symposium is free and open to the public. Registration is requested.
