Grand Opening of American Puppet Theater Today: The Photography of Richard Termine at Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry

The Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry, in collaboration with The Jim Henson Foundation, will celebrate the 60th anniversary of UConn’s Puppet Arts Program with the grand opening of American Puppet Theater Today: The Photography of Richard Termine. This exhibition features over 130 captivating images and selected puppets from Termine’s extensive work, highlighting puppetry from renowned artists such as Paul Zaloom, Torry Bend, Basil Twist, Dan Hurlin, Tarish Pipkins, Theodora Skipitares, Bread and Puppet Theater, Janie Geiser, and Tom Lee.

Richard Termine, a UConn Puppet Arts Program alumnus, has spent over 30 years documenting the world of American puppet theater. He is the lead performing arts photographer for The New York Times and has been the in-house photographer for Sesame Street since 1988. His work has appeared in publications such as The Washington Post, Time, Newsweek, and American Theatre.

The grand opening event will take place on Friday, January 31, at 6 p.m. with refreshments, followed by an exhibition tour at 6:30 p.m. led by Richard Termine and Cheryl Henson, President of The Jim Henson Foundation. The tour will also be streamed live on the Ballard Institute’s Facebook page.

Admission is free, and no reservations are required. The Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry is located at 1 Royce Circle, Storrs, CT 06268.
