For Which It Stands… Exhibition at Fairfield University Art Museum

July 25

A major exhibition exploring American history and identity through art is on view through July 25, 2026 at the Fairfield University Art Museum, 1073 North Benson Road, Fairfield, CT 06824.

For Which It Stands… brings together more than 70 works by artists from the early 20th century to the present, all centered on interpretations of the American flag. Created as part of the nation’s 250th anniversary commemoration, the exhibition examines how artists have used this powerful symbol to reflect on justice, representation, and national identity.

The show features a wide range of media and perspectives, including works by artists such as Jasper Johns, Faith Ringgold, Robert Rauschenberg, Shepard Fairey, and Julie Mehretu. Highlights include Childe Hassam’s Italian Day, May 1918 and a newly commissioned textile sculpture by Maria de Los Angeles. Together, the works invite visitors to consider how the meaning of the American flag has evolved and who it represents.

Recognized by national publications including The Wall Street Journal and Hyperallergic, the exhibition offers a thought-provoking look at key moments in U.S. history through the lens of contemporary and historical art. Complementary programming, including gallery talks, lectures, and family-friendly activities, is offered throughout the run of the exhibition.

Admission and related programs are free and open to the public.
