Film Screening: Carving the Divine – Buddhist Sculptors of Japan at Fairfield University Art Museum

A compelling documentary screening and discussion takes place on April 13, 2026 at 5:30 pm at the Fairfield University Art Museum, 1073 North Benson Road, Fairfield, CT 06824.
Carving the Divine: Buddhist Sculptors of Japan offers a rare, behind-the-scenes look at a 1,400-year-old tradition of Buddhist woodcarving. The film explores the lives and work of master sculptors dedicated to preserving this intricate art form, highlighting both the cultural significance and the challenges faced in maintaining these practices in a rapidly changing world.
Following the screening, director Yujiro Seki will join virtually for a live Q&A session via Zoom, offering insight into the filmmaking process and the traditions featured in the documentary.
This event is co-presented with Fairfield University’s departments of Visual & Performing Arts and Religious Studies, along with the Asian Studies program and the Arts Institute.
