Enough Is Enuf: Our Failed Attempts to Make English Easier to Spell at Mark Twain House & Museum

The Mark Twain House & Museum in Hartford will host author and humorist Gabe Henry on Tuesday, June 24, at 7 pm for an in-person event titled Enough Is Enuf: Our Failed Attempts to Make English Easier to Spell. Part of the museum’s Trouble Begins series, the talk blends history, comedy, and linguistic oddities in a spirited examination of English spelling reform.
Henry will explore the colorful history of those who tried—and failed—to simplify English spelling, from Noah Webster’s dictionary reforms to Mark Twain’s passionate advocacy and George Bernard Shaw’s radical proposals. With stories of quirky proposals like spelling “through” as “thru” and “laugh” as “laf,” the evening promises both laughs and thoughtful insights into the English language’s complicated evolution.
Books will be available for purchase, and attendees can choose a ticket + book bundle or receive a $5 discount on the book with ticket-only admission on the night of the event. A book signing with the author will follow the discussion.
The Mark Twain House & Museum is located at 351 Farmington Avenue, Hartford, Connecticut. For more information and to register, visit marktwainhouse.org.
