May 19, 2018 @ 9:00 am - 2:00 pm

East Lyme Touch a Truck

East Lyme Touch a Truck to feature Fire Trucks and Fire Safety On Saturday, May 19, 2018 the East Lyme Auxiliary of Child and Family Agency of Southeastern Connecticut and the East Lyme Parks and Recreation Department will co-sponsor our eleventh annual Touch-a-Truck event. This family event will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at McCook Point Park in Niantic, CT. There will be a Horn Free Hour from 9 to 10 a.m. especially for the younger set and for noise-sensitive children. The main event is, of course, Trucks, and this year the event will feature Fire Trucks and Fire Safety vehicles.

With the help of Steve Wargo, the Niantic Fire Chief, the event will feature a pumper, which carries both water and hoses, used for putting out fires in places where there is not a connection to town water. An ambulance from Niantic Fire Dept. will also be available to allow the children to climb into the vehicle and even lie down on the stretcher. A Ladder Truck from Flanders Fire Dept. will demonstrate to the public what is needed to fight fires on second story buildings and roofs.

Finally, an antique, 1930’s Fire Truck provided by Norman Peck will be available to show how much the technology has evolved. The Mystic Smoke House Truck from the Mystic Fire Department will also be present and will be staffed by the Junior Firefighters of Niantic Fire Department, 14-18 year olds, who will demonstrate what to do in the event of a fire. This will be an opportunity for the children to meet and talk to the Junior Firefighters who are learning about fire safety, rescue, and emergency medical services. These training opportunities for the teenagers not only help to develop leadership qualities but also help to develop a life-long interest in volunteerism.

To allow the children to be part of this theme, the Auxiliary, replacing the traditional, yellow construction hats, will be providing to the children bright- red Firemen’s Hats. Wearing these Firemen’s Hats, the children will be able to climb, steer, blow horns, and imagine, in an amazing array of trucks. This unique event will feature vehicles from fire departments, law enforcement, commercial companies, industrial companies and rental companies.

Once they have explored all of the various trucks, the children can go on to experience crafts, face-painting, and balloon animals. Once again, Roaming Railroad will be on hand to give rides around the park for an additional charge. The Rotary will also be present with registrations for Amber Alert.

Of course, active children work up an appetite. Throughout the day, there will be hotdogs, hamburgers, ice cream. Kettle corn, and drinks for sale. No one should go home hungry, but they will go home happy and tired!

The requested donation is $4 per person. Children under age two are admitted free of charge. Proceeds benefit the work of Child & Family
Agency of Southeastern CT as it annually meets the needs of over seventeen thousand children and their families in our communities.

Don’t miss this fun family event!
