Day With(out) Art 2025: Derek Jarman’s Blue (1993) at Yale University Art Gallery

In observance of World AIDS Day and Day With(out) Art 2025, the Yale University Art Gallery presents a screening of Derek Jarman’s Blue (1993) on Monday, December 1, 2025, from 4 pm to 5:20 pm.

Jarman’s final film, completed shortly before his death, is a groundbreaking meditation on the experience of living with AIDS. Presented entirely against a luminous field of blue, the film pairs vivid sound, music, and narration to reflect on illness, mortality, and the persistence of creativity and humanity in the face of loss. More than 30 years later, Blue remains a cornerstone of queer cinema and a moving testament to resilience and artistic vision.

The program will include an introduction by Lily Waterton, the Jock Reynolds Fellow in Public Programs at the Yale University Art Gallery.

This event is generously cosponsored by the Gallery’s Martin A. Ryerson Lectureship Fund, the Yale Center for British Art, and Public Humanities at Yale. The Yale University Art Gallery is located at 1111 Chapel Street, New Haven, Connecticut. Admission is free and open to the public.
