CSMNH: Archaeology Field School for Adults with the Office of State Archaeology at University of Connecticut

Adults interested in history, archaeology, and hands-on research can explore Connecticut’s past through the CSMNH Archaeology Field School for Adults, offered by the Connecticut State Museum of Natural History, the Office of State Archaeology, and the Friends of the Office of State Archaeology. This week-long immersive program takes place July 6–10, 2026, from 9 am to 3 pm each day at a 17th-century colonial site in South Glastonbury, Connecticut.
Participants will gain practical experience contributing to an active archaeological investigation while learning essential field techniques, including excavation methods, mapping, paperwork, data management, and artifact identification. Working alongside professional archaeologists, attendees will engage directly with primary historical sources and discover how archaeology helps uncover and preserve Connecticut’s rich cultural heritage.
The program is led by Connecticut State Archaeologist Dr. Sarah Sportman and is designed to foster a deeper understanding of archaeological ethics, preservation practices, and the importance of protecting historical resources for future generations. While open to all adults ages 18 and older, the field school may be especially valuable for educators who teach history or social sciences in classroom or museum settings.
Registration for the week-long field school is $300 for Museum Members, teachers, and veterans, and $350 for non-members. Space is limited.
A brown bag lunch break is included each day. Participants must be at least 18 years old to register.
