Connecticut Dance Alliance Martin Luther King, Jr. Dance of Day

The Connecticut Dance Alliance will host the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Dance of Day on Monday, January 16, 2023 from 10am – 2:30pm. at CREC’s Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts Half Day Program, 15 Vernon Street, Hartford, CT

The annual event honors the teachings and legacy of Dr. King as well as the abundant African American contributions to the world of dance. This year the day will celebrate the black dancers from communities around Connecticut with classes in Afro-Caribbean, stilt walking, popping, Horton technique, modern and capoeira. The event will also focus on elements of collaboration, history and educating the participants on the experiences of people of color in the dance world.

The day will consist of two sets of master classes and a panel discussion with our guest artists about their experience in dance as artists of color. This year’s guest teachers include Peter Reynolds of Studio 860, Thulani Davis of Spectrum in Motion Dance Theater, Christine Kershaw from the Cooperative Arts & Humanities High School, Stephen Hankey from the Cooperative Arts & Humanities High School and Island Reflections Dance Theatre Company, Lauren Horn of (subira.vs.movement), and Mellissa Craig from the CREC Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts and Judy Dworin Performance Project.
